Tidal Potomac 5/24/18

With the river blown out and nice weather predicted, I decided to get out early and do a half-day trip.  I was on the water by 6:00am and it was a couple feet high and heavily stained.  Morning was nice.  After getting nothing on the established spatterdock field, I moved to the cove.  After throwing a tube and swim bait and getting no bites, I turned to my chatterbait.  It was the ticket with the higher water and shad still present.  I hooked a nice one and it turned out to be 18.5", but solid and felt about 4 pounds.

After a few minutes, I hooked a big catfish on the chatterbait in the same area.  It was at least 28" long, but I had trouble getting a hold on the fish and cut my finger with the chatterbait blade.  Not too bad, but I skipped the picture.  I tried the tube again and finally got a smaller LM with that.

The LM looked like they were post-spawn.  I moved around the cove and caught another large catfish on the chatterbait.  It was not long, but obviously had been gorging on shad.   I was able to get the lip gripper on that one.

I lost two more LM, one about a pound on the chatterbait and one on a swim jig with a keitech trailer.   That one was over two pounds and it came off right at the boat.  If I had a net I would have been better off, but too much to carry in the canoe.  I got off the water a little after noon.  It was low tide and the bite had died off.  Not a lot of bites, but decent size.  Great morning to be on the water.
