This is our 2nd year going to Starretts Pointe. Crew was the same, Ernie, Greg, George and Bob.
As we did last year, we met up for a BBQ lunch at Something Different in Urbana. Highly recommend it! Great food...great service. You feel like you live down there when you visit SD.
Their Tri tips were excellent (new for us). And everything else we had was outstanding as well.....
Now, to some fishing.
We put in at Freeport again. Bob and I wanted some big white perch and Greg just wanted to get out on the water as he has not fished as much as he would have wanted to this year.
Bob caught a 10.75" perch as well as some keeper specks. Greg caught fish as well and I was able to capture one of the Specs....
There may be more pictures later and I will add them in as I get them.
I caught a bunch of WP including a 10.5 incher. But then I got slammed and it was a 16.5" red drum...on UL tackle. What a blast!
We came back in around 5:30p and drove over to the house where George was awaiting for us...since yesterday. Somehow, he got his days mixed up and arrived a day early. Lucky for him, Capt. Mike had a bed for him and also took him fishing on Friday morning. All good!
On Saturday morning, we had a late breakfast (7a) due to the high tide. Breakfast was scrambled eggs, potatoes with or without Spanish chorizo, breakfast sausage etc.
We got to the fishing area in the Dragon and some much higher than forecasted winds greeted us. This made for some tough fishing but we all caught fish and had a great morning.
Here are pix of Bob and Greg!
BTW, we like catching bowfin over LMB and we like it when we get other goodies mixed in! Two of my bowfin were caught on UL tackle as I was making one last effort in landing a big white perch. What I got was a beat down trying to land the bowfin on the UL rod. Highlight of the day for me...for sure!
Time to take out and head in for dinner!
And dinner is nothing short of spectacular!
Now it was time to do some salt water fishing....
....but it was really slow. Bob caught some specs while Greg and I just enjoyed being out on the water.
What a night!
So....it was announced that breakfast on Sunday would be later (8a) so we slept in. But when I went down at 7:45a, they were all eating already. Change of plans? Where they going to tell me?
Regardless, breakfast consisted of bacon, Texas style venison, cinnamon French Toast and a few other goodies.
On to the Dragon again!
I fished alone with Capt. Dave since George had to leave early.
Here is Capt. Mike with Bob and Greg.
Fishing was VERY slow early but the scenery was spectacular!
And trying to get unstuck after getting hung up on a cypress nut is virtually impossible. Capt. Dave and I broke off a few limbs to get this bait back!
And then there was the cow....
But I was not getting any hits on what I was throwing until I had a wind knot. While fixing it, my line was still in the water. We were moving ever so slowly. As I lifted my rod after fixing the knot, I had a fish on!
We decided that slow was the pattern and from there on I fished painfully slow and caught a few, including a nice warmouth.
Then, it was time to get back out on the main creek and the bowfin were playing. My 2 biggest did not come in the boat. One thrashed so much as Capt. Dave was trying to get him over the side of the boat, hat he spit the hook. Another one did a spin dance in the air and got off. Spectacular runs!
I then caught this guy....
....but we had no cue as to what it was. Can anyone ID it?
Can't wait until the next one in a year!

Missed you guys on Sunday and the boil looked excellent! Betcha the trash man will love picking that bag up after it's fermented a few days.
That last pix looks like the salad we were catching to go with the fish
Mike & Dave are great skippers and Heather's an excellent cook. And a special thx to Mike for being flexible with my blonde moment

Awesome report! I don't know whether I enjoyed reading about the fishing or the food more!!

What a great fishery...did Capt Mike and Dave tell you who their first fisherman to miss a morning trip was?

Man what a great report, that looks like so much fun. It's a pretty long ride to get back into Dragon Run isn't it?

Not too bad unless there's wind. They have 40 & 60 hp motors. On Sunday, we were waaaay up the Run. Beautiful place.
Freeport would be the place to put in....but one needs to know where the channel is or you can end up stuck on a submerged island.

Yes, we heard the story but "what happens at the Pointe, stays at the Pointe".

Or scuttled boat

Sorry, no pics here, just fond memories of the ones that got away. I was too busy trying to get a bowfin in the boat to take a break. I didn't even eat my sandwich till the ride back to the ramp. Those things are true beasts, glad there were some wimpy largemouths to pick up the slack.
Another great trip to the Dragon, and only 362 days till the next trip.

I believe that this is what got Junger to miss the morning trip on his weekend....just sayin'!
Some fishies....

Yes indeed, that smokey whiskey played it's part. We caught a lot of small specks and perch from the dock, I primarily used a small spinner with a lightning shad swimbait and worked it like a shrimp. I also got a 15" striper on a Mepps Dressed Aglia #3 from the dock. On the Sunday morning trip, it was tough day of fishing...real sunny and got up into the mid 80's. But a few minutes after I popped my German beer, I landed a 3lb'er on the little dipper. I missed several bowfin, but the other Tom landed 3 of them. Great time with the guys at Starrett Pointe...hopefully I can make it back again...without missing any fishing sessions!
