UP 9/4/17

After working 6-7 days the last 3 weeks, I got two days off in a row an decided to fish today.  I got out on the water about 6:30am and headed upriver.  It was cool and the water was clear, with grass finally growing to the top of the water (usually happens in July or August).  I started the morning with a Chug bug and Whopper Plopper, but no takers.  I switched to a Keitech swimbait and missed my first few hits.  I think it was smaller fish.  I finally landed a 14.25" on the swimbait.

I stuck with swimbaits, both on exposed jig heads and the Hookup SWM jig in the deeper sections and the Whopper Plopper was working in the shallow/faster sections.  I lost a few on the Plopper, but had a lot of fun with it.  Almost all fish were 13-14 inches, with the exception of a couple smaller and one 14.5" caught on the Plopper.  It was a clear water pattern, with natural colors.  I also caught a couple on a Fat Albert grub on a smaller SWM jig.  Some baits had dyed tails.

The wind was kind of annoying, but helped the bite some.  Coolest bites were with the Whopper Plopper.  I had 4 blow ups in a row on different casts in one spot.  I had one hooked, but it got off.  I also tried it when I was anchored for lunch.  I cast it downstream and just retrieved slowly and BAM, hooked a feisty 14.25" smallie.  I did it again and got a hit, but did not connect.

I lost my biggest fish, hooked on my Rebel Humpy, when I was trying to net it.  No more bites after that.  Ended up with about 14 landed.  My trolling motor also stopped working in forward.  I hit the ramp at about 2:45pm and it was a madhouse.  At least I got out and caught a few!

Re: UP 9/4/17

You are a brave (or desperate) man for going out there today but glad you got into some.

Now, it's time to start finding the bigger ones!

Time to go fishin' again!

Re: UP 9/4/17

I saw lots of fish.  Bass, cats and fallfish or suckers.  Many were on the move.  Many flashes of fish eating off the bottom (fallfish or suckers?).  I saw some larger smallies, but did not get bit by one.  Time to fish some deeper water unless we get some more rain.  Good kayak water.

Three guys went by me early and started fishing right in front of me.  I ran up a bit to get away from them.  Other than that, it was ok until I got to the ramp.

Re: UP 9/4/17

I fished the UP today too.  Started later, just wasn't motivated to be up before the sun since I have to do that M-F.  Launched at Kepheart and probably got to the river around 8:30 and motored up past the water plant to start the drift back.  My usual crankbaits and tube weren't doing anything.  Not until 11:15 after switching to a 2/5oz green/silver little cleo spoon did I start catching fish.  And they were all in shallow areas without grass.  Caught a final one at the mouth of Goose Creek before heading back up.  Total of six I think with a bunch more coming off.  The wind blowing me across the river and even nearly back up the river wasn't favorable, but the ripples did seem to help with the spoon.  Not much boat traffic up that way.   I could see loads of fish too. Some really massive carp on the way back.

I saw someone that looked like momusau when I stopped at the Giant just before getting home.

Beautiful fish and good looking water. Nice way to spend the holiday.

Re: UP 9/4/17

Now I remember why I stopped launching at that ramp during the weekends

Swim baits worked well yesterday - fluke bite tried to work, but died down quickly

Too much grass in the water to fish a treble or kiss the rocks on the bottom
