Pavilion Lake Report - 6/29/08

I went out to the Pavilion Lake yesterday evening for about an hour and a half and ended up with a dozen bass. You know it is going to be a good time when you catch a fish on your very first cast! In the protected areas I was successful with a t-rig worm in a pumpkinseed color. In the more open water I used both the t-rig and a Bass Pro XPS topwater pop-r. I was fortunate to experience both a submerged and topwater bite. I believe the topwater was active because of the wind and water movement.

I caught one fish, flipped him up to shore and he popped the hook from his mouth. He landed broadside on the ground. I picked him up, did a quick evaluation and tossed him back into the water. He lay sideways and motionless in the water for a moment as I pondered whether or not he killed himself (is it fair to lay the blame on him?? hehe) when he shook free. I then noticed a vague flicker of his side fin and then some more movement. As I cheered him on, he flipped over and swam off. I guess he just stunned himself. Good to see that he swam away though for somebody else to catch.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

I have always tried to tell the fish to hold still and i will get them back in the water safely but I think they talk amongst themselves when some don't make it back in the water!
