5-18-17, UP

Drxfish and I met up at the ramp at 3:30p and by 4 pm (we made a little bit of a long run), we were fishing.

We threw spinnerbaits, swinbaits and crankbaits and....nothing! Not 1 hit!

The water was high (just over 5' at POR) and swift but we managed to find some still water on the VA shoreline. While lamenting, John relayed a story about a guy that fishes high water events and throws up to an ounce jig. Well, my jigs were not big enough but I had a hefty tube with a rattle (very weird setup) so I tossed it and immediately got bit.

And then another....

And a channel cat....

And then some more....

And...well, a few more. And some big ones!

John quickly switched up and he started nailing them. They liked the clacking.

Strong hits and powerful runs in the current. Each fish felt like it was way bigger....what a  rush.

And a double!

And more...

Then it sprinkled...no big deal until we heard thunder. I put the marine radio on and they were saying some strong storms were moving in. I told John that we should think about going back since we had a good 20-25 minute run back to the ramp. But he kept fishing. I finally said, "let's go", just as he got slammed! This fish wanted no part of being brought to the boat. He fought hard and finally, we got him in the net. A healthy, strong 19 incher!

Now we had to high tail it back (it was 7 pm) but we got wet. At least the big storms stayed away from us.

This was as good a 3 hour period of fishing as I've ever experienced on the UP. I caught 13-15 fish, John caught at least a dozen.

What an afternoon!!

Thanks, Ernie!  I was happy to be your net man for the evening!  That last one was a pig.  It fought hard and kept dodging and dogging me at the boat.  Allergies killed my eyes at the end, but we got into a good bunch for a while.  Too bad the rain and storms came up.  Awesome boat and great trip!

BTW, you were closer to 20 and I landed 6 or 7.  So many bites and hookups for both of us!

What a day! Great report and pics. I'm glad I'll have time to read it several times.

Ernie I like the way you take the back of your boat.. When Capt Dave and I fish I like the back of the boat but cannot stand the way he runs the trolling motor.. so I end up in the front anyways. I have control issues I guess.
With the new remotes I could run it from the back but still have that control issue.

Great trip and good thinking outside the box.

Thanks for a great report.

That TM is a complete game changer for me. The Spot lock is unreal. I can sit and chill in the back and have total control of the boat. Mike Luparello used the foot pedal last week and he liked it (Spot Lock). What a difference it makes especially when shad fishing and not having to fiddle with a real anchor.
