4-27-17, Occoquan

I picked up Jeff at 0640 and on down the road we went...with the work traffic going the other way.

This was a special day as Jeff will be moving soon and I wanted to make sure he had a shot at the shad one more time.

It was a spectacular  morning....

...and the river looked good with lots of current coming down from the dam (water was spilling over it).

We only caught a few herring and small hickories all the way up....

...so we dropped down a little and the bite got better.

Then we dropped down a little bit more and started to hammer the fatties!

After we got tired of catching a bunch, we switched to the fly rod. We made a few adjustments and then it flat out opened up!

There were only a few boats out, plenty of room. Only issue was these loud mouths!

While Fletcher's is a magical place, it takes effort to get up there. The big "O" is easy to get to and in less than 10 minutes after you launch, you are fishing.

I really do not know how many we caught today but I don't believe that a 5 minute period went by without one of us hooked up.

Before we went in, we tried another spot (with spinning) and we both mentioned how foreign this seemed after catching so many on the 6wts.

Great day!!

Great report and pics. Perfect fishing weather today, I'm jealous.

Those mats on the floor of your boat- are they for traction, anti-fatigue, or something else?

Those mats came from Home Depot. They mainly keep from tracking the dirt on the carpet but they cushion as well.

You did very well compared to me at Location X. We landed 8 whites and four hickory's. Missed about 8 more as they shook off on the jump. Biggest white was about 3 lbs.

Great report.

Thanks

No whites where we were but we lost many hicks to the "professional release".
