After our church's Men's Breakfast, I went solo out of Algonkian and paddled the kayak to the western edge of the 2nd island. It took me 16 minutes of constant paddling (against the current) to get to the blue gill hole. All I took was my 6wt fly rod! I made a few casts and immediately got one....




....but I really was after smallies so I paddled a bit more and got on the MD side of the island. The current there is pretty swift as it goes over a gravel bar. Since I could not hold position, I ditched the kayak and wadded the flats. There were thousands of minnows in the grass and just out side. I even saw a "bait ball" but it was in 8" of water, 4 or 5 feet wide!

The smallies were active and over the next 60-70 minutes, I must have caught 30 of them....they all looked like this!

I was hoping for a bigger one but they did not cooperate. After getting tired of doing that, I started my float back to the ramp. I got a nice hit in one of the grass beds on shore and I thought that maybe I had a decent smallie but there was no fight which meant….



…..greenie! A few minutes later, I finally got a bigger smallie…



...well, it was bigger than the others! This one did some acrobatics and behaved like a big one!

I quit when I saw the world’s best fisherman taking a rest!



The boat traffic was not bad and a couple of jet skiers actually slowed down when they went by me…I thanked them!

Excellent way to spend 3-4 hours!
