Greg and I were supposed to perch fish today in my boat but it is n the shop to get the trolling motor repaired. I had suggested yak fishing but I knew he really wanted to get out in the salt. I called Capt. Dennis Fleming and he said he had a trip in the morning but would be glad to take us out in the afternoon for a 4 hour cruise. Boy, were we glad he could accommodate us as Greg said that, "I really need to fish!"
Hmmm...drive 2+ hours to fish maybe 3 hours after getting to the fishing spot?
Well, I decided to go with it and invited Bill to come with us as he and I were to fish next Tuesday and you know the rest of the story.
So....we made a nice day out of it by getting down there early and having a nice lunch at the Chesapeake Deli in Dunkirk.
We were on the boat at 2:30p and off we went.
As promised, we had a 30 minute ride to get to the fish. But saw this cool old (restored) oyster boat on the way out....the Wm. B. Tennison.
Once we got to where the fish were, we started catching.
Bill definitely had the hot hand early. He was using a L'il Bunker in chartreuse from Specialized Baits.
Then it was my turn to get hot!
I used a blue/white Spro jig about 25% of the time. Then I switched to a top water bait until some bluefish tore the front hook off! I switched to a slash bait and they tore it up. So much so that the lip came off. Now I used it as a top water bait and it was deadly. Dennis thought I was crazy but the fish liked it so who am I to argue. To add insult to injury, another fish tore the back hook up but I continued to catch them (with a few misses).
Greg was catching fish as well including the biggest blue. He was at the front of the boat so I never got a pic of him. The action was so hot that we barely had time to take pics......doubles and triples were the name of the game as well and a dozen keeper stripers, 3 Spanish and tons of blues including a few drag screamers!
This is what we saw with 30 minutes to go in the trip!
It was fast and furious with many triples coming over the side!
The morning trip had caught @170 fish but it was an 8 hour trip. We were trying to match those number but fell short. We only caught about 140 fish (stripers, blues and Spanish mackerel). But wait, they were out longer. For the time fishing, we averaged around 35 fish an hour...much more than the other group. Yep, we were celebrating on the ride home as we took in some nice scenery!
Once again, fishing with Capt. Dennis is a blast!
A nice BBQ dinner capped off the evening!
We left Ashurn at 11:30a and returned at 10:15p. We had virtually non stop action for 3 hours and we were beat!
Was it worth the drive?
YEP!!

That is a heck of a 3 hour fishing trip. Way to go! Nothing like tearing up tackle on mean fish!

Amazing! Pretty crazy how they ripped apart the lures.

Great report. Looks like there is quite a bit of history to that boat too.
