jig fishin

Okay folks, lets talk about jigs.  Shopping around for jigs I am finding there are a bunch of different styles of jigs.  Im just starting out with this bass fishing and would like to get a little confidence before I get overwhelmed with the choices and options.  What is the most versatile style of jig?  Preferred weight and color?  Any trailers you couldnt live without?  If you could only have 3 jigs what would they be?  Ill fishing local ponds mostly.  So far im thinking 3/8 oz. black n blue arkie head or strike king Premier Pro with a yamamoto flappin hog.    Lets see if we can get a good discussion going.

Re: jig fishin

Personally I like a swivel head jig like the Gene Larew hard head and a big craw. Skirt optional.

Here is the secret...
What you believe will work will work.

Find something that speaks to you and fish it religiously.
Hours on the water and faith are the key.

Keep listening to your intuition and meld it with the experience of others.

The jig is a powerful tool.

Re: jig fishin

Thanks everyone.  very good imput that I agree with bigjeffie.  I totally understand about having confidence in what im fishing.  I am so used to having confidence in what im fishing that it feels really weird not being sure about what im doing.  I wish confidence was a switch I could just flip, haha.  sounds like I was thinknig pretty much in line with what I should be.  I just need to get out there and catch some fish to get my confidence going.

Re: jig fishin

The jig works- keep chucking it.

Even a guy like curly , who fishes a jig really weird, catches one now and then

You'll throw your confidence baits more and more so that kinda goes w/ what BigJ says.

A jig can be allot of stuff.  I have had great luck throwing jigs with a buck tail base and a silicon hair outer level.  Butch Neil made the jig for the local mid-Atlantic water shed that all the back country river anglers threw with luck.  When Butch's store got robbed and he closed down, I started making them for the local crowd.  I've seen more c-class smallies caught in rivers with them.  Here's some examples

I also tie one with zonker strips and cross cut rabbit strips that imitates a swimming minnow or a leach

Then a jig can be some lead, a hook, and a chunk of plastic.  My fav, since this is what I throw 90% of the time.  Started pouring a while back and enjoy catching fish on something I make

Grub jig

Tube jig

SWM jig.  This one's great.  Original mold for ice fishing, and with a dremel tool & a little JB Weld came up with this creation for just about any chance of plastic made and a bonus is the jig's virtually snag proof when fishing the rocky ledgy Piedmont rivers

Re: jig fishin

well.  caught my first jig fish today.  not a biggie, only about 15".  but have to get the first out of the way before all the rest can follow.  caught him way out there on a black n blue with GY trailer.  threw it down his throat as he ate it as soon as it hit the water before I even engaged my reel.  skipped him across the surface all the way back to the bank.

Re: jig fishin

Jigs catch fish, plain and simple. Hookup's jigs catch A LOT of fish. As you keep at it you'll build confidence and determine what does and doesn't work for your particular angling style. Congrats on your first jig fish Pier Man, here's to many more.

Thank you Ernie for the jigs.  I have had more success with those (1/4) then the one I was using before (3/8).  Im not sure if it was the different jig style or smaller size, slower fall, or different trailer but im not gonna argue with it.  I went out for an hour this morning on the way to work and got 7 within the hour with the largest around 3-3.5 lbs or so.  Ive been mostly fishing the same area while I try to learn the jig fishin.  once I figure it out a little bit and have more time Ill venture out and explore more.  im still tryin to get comfortable but im getting there.  Hookup, I may need to get up with you about some more jigs.

George, caught a few smallies with your SWM jig and paddle tail swim bait today.  Nothing big, but stuck them good...

I've learned you need just enough lead to get them to tickle the rocks on the bottom.
