8-6-16, Upper Potomac

George Thurston, Chris Campo and I met up at Pennyfield at 0630 to do a little smallie fishing on the UP.

On the way there while on River Rd., I saw a flash. Oh, oh....speed limit went from 40 to 30 and apparently I didn't notice.

We got on the water after shuttling and it was a gorgeous day!

We (well, Chris and George) caught a few fish here and there but the numbers (or size) were slim.

I caught a few little ones and missed a few but definitely had an off day.

As we were approaching the old dam, George paved the way and I followed. All good until I noticed the rock on my left. As soon as I hit it, I started to feel like I was going to turtle so I jumped out and kicked my rod over. Immediately, I got on my back (that is what you are taught) and saw the rod but could not reach it. The current was fast! George brought the yak to me and after doing inventory, only the rod was missing...a Loomis Bronzeback with a Stradic reel. OUCH!!!!

So we looked for the rod for a bit and remembering when John went into the drink last year, I figured the rod would travel downriver. Chris and I actually spotted it but the current kept messing with us and cold not get a visual again. Oh well!

Soon after, Chris was close by and yelled that he had a record smallie on the line...until it started taking him downstream!

After a nice tussle, Chris got the carp in!

A few minutes later, George lets out a whoop and he has a nice one on!

These guys just bring me along to be their photographer.....

Anyway, we loaded the yaks on George's vehicle (yes, all ...the guy is a master!) and went on back to retrieve the cars.

No ticket on the way home but did stop at The Meadow fro an espresso custard shake. That made losing the rod a little better....

Ouch, that's a tough day. At least it was a nice day to get wet. When Thai and I went to the 'doah in the spring it was probably in the 50s.

It was very refreshing despite the loss....

Bummer about the ticket and rod/reel.  I was lucky we found mine when we went out.  I guess they all can't be good days.  At least you did not get hurt or lose more.

Bummer, but on the bright side you got to wet a line instead of being inside at work.

Had a great time except when you lost the rod ... good news is you didn't loose everything and you walked away from it.  We've all had to make sacrifices to the river gods

Hope you don't get a surprise in the mail ...

And....I am now the proud owner of a Hook Up custom built ML rod that I managed to talk George in to selling to me. It's an awesome smallie rod....

Even though George made it for himself, and never fished it....it was like it was made for me. Exactly what I wanted/needed!

Re: 8-6-16, Upper Potomac

I was honored when Ernie called and wanted the rod

At first, I was speechless - which for anyone who know's me is very hard for me to be

I'm glad you enjoy the rod Ernie and hope that many pigs are stuck in the future with it

Re: 8-6-16, Upper Potomac

This was an expensive day....lost the rod/reel combo but I got to buy a really cool replacement. And....$40 speeding ticket just arrived in the mail. I was going 43 in a 40....but I didn't see the next sign that went down to 30. Oh well.....

hopefully the admin fees don't total over $100 for a $40 ticket!  But, you did get a pretty awesome rod out of it!  Lets look at the positives....

Ticket by mail...easy deal. Send the $40 and they are happy. No points.

And you are so very right....that rod is incredible. And to think that George never even fished it!

Re: 8-6-16, Upper Potomac

One time I was wading goose creek. 1987. Back when you had to walk to kepheart from rt 7.
At least there we fish back there in those days.
Anyway, I tried to cross some fast water. I learned how powerful shin high current can be when it's rolling. I lost a whole Plano kit loaded with ultralight crankbaits and assorted accessories. Rapalas (the old good expensive ones)
Anyway, I lived.  Respect the water boys. Sorry for ernies day. I thought only I had spells of misfortune like that.
I'm the end, we all lead charmed lives. These losses are miniscule, and actually point to just how fortunate we are.
I miss you guys. The best lessons are expensive. That is how a knucklehead like me learns unfortunateky

Re: 8-6-16, Upper Potomac

Glad to hear from you and hope all is well.

When I took the plunge, my 1st thought is what they tell you. Get on your back and ride it out. Had I tried to stand and save the rod, there would be a possibility that I would not be posting this. If my foot gets jammed on a rock, I go down and stay down.
