So...I get's this call from my buddy Pete....who says that the Caddis and Stonefly hatch is roaring on the Yakima River and that I have to experience it. Pete isn't right about much....but he is never wrong about fly fishing...and drinking. Since I do the prior and not the later, I figured it was time to revisit one of my favorite rivers....the Yakima...Blue Ribbon Rainbow Trout river!!!
We put the drift boat in the water at 1pm....91 degrees...but with a stiff breeze...beautiful.
Water flows were up...which is great for the Yak...with the higher water flow, there are more bugs in the water and the fish hug the shoreline:
The bugs on the water were as thick as advertised and it was tough to decide what to start with....but since the sun was still high, we decided to start with nymphing and streamers. Didn't take but 50yards and we had our first fish. Note the silly faceguard was to shield against the sun and all of the bugs...if you didn't cover your mouth and nose, there was a very good chance you'd inhale a caddis...they were freak'n everywhere. Not only that...but they were HUGE!!!
We caught a bunch on nymph rig's, but nothing on streamers.
After the shadow's started in the canyon areas, we switched to dry's and emergers....and caught a ridiculous number of nice fish.
As the sunset....the largest fish of the day was caught...and it was the final fish of the day...about 18"'s and a very satisfying way to end a great day!!
I lost count on how many fish were caught...50 or 60? Probably more...it was like hitting a school of Bluefish working a ball of bait fish on the Chesapeake....but these were trout. Utterly amazing....
Best performing setup was a deer hair Caddis with a la Fontaine Emerger as a trailer...deadly combo:
Next up....Return to Catalina Island!!!!
Best regards,
