Shenandoah River float 4-8

Met up with George at the take out at 7:15-ish. We loaded up and headed to the put in and were on the water around 8:00. This was my first time taking out my latest kayak. It is my first traditional kayak as the last two have been Hobies. I learned lots today and have lots of things to adjust. The wind was blowing like crazy.

I had tied on my lures the night before. A grub, a buzzbait and a finesse jig. I saw a few fish hitting the surface so I decided to give it a go. A few cast in and I get slammed! Turned out to be a really nice one! Got some fish slime onto the kayak.

Got to break out the "lie board" as George calls it haha.

The buzzbait was an older one so it got tore up and the skirt came loose. I tied on another buzzbait and got hit again.

Worked on the flat water closer to shore and along structure. Got hit a bunch of times but a few came unbuttoned.
I was pretty surprised with the size of the smallies I was catching with the buzzbait.

This was the smallest of the bunch

And this was the largest

The wind kept us in place and we weren't really "floating" anywhere. George pointed out that we had been in the same area for two hours haha. We tried to work our way down. As soon as the wind changed direction, the bite seemed to have died.

The wind was brutal and it started to sleet on us.

It was a cold but beautiful float. Lots of bald eagles and good conversations.

Can't wait to get out on the Shenandoah again!

Re: Shenandoah River float 4-8

I was stubborn. much like Ernie when you tell him he won't catch anything on what he has tied on. lol. it paid off for me. I couldn't buy a bite with anything else. I had no confidence in anything else, even though George was catching them on tubes, I just wasn't feeling it. I forgot how it was to work a lure on a kayak in the river. I have a lot to re-learn.

Nothing better than watching your topwater lure get hammered though....i just got pumped just typing that. Need to get back out there soon.

Had a great time Andrew.  Who would have thought top water when it was so cold?

Confidence is crucial fishing & sticking with what you felt confidence with paid off well.

Now  is the time to get out in the mid-Atlantic rivers.  Fish are waking up and are thinking two things - eat & promulgate.
