Tide was good tonight and the fish have started to bite a little better. The heat was unrelenting and took many icy cold waters and Gatoraid to keep hydrated. The target was snakehead AKA Potomac Pike and we had several follows and two hooks ups with one landed. Some nice LGmouth also where landed.

Despite Captain Mike's best efforts, fishing was very slow. Only a few bites and 3 fish landed. Weather was miserable...hot, humid, and no breeze. I decided to end the trip a little early due to the above. First trip with Captain Mike and I appreciated his knowledge and willingness to share. He tried hard to get us on fish, but it was just one of those days. Not sure why, but most of the fishing reports on various sites indicate that the "catching" is way down from past years throughout the region.
Any opinions as to why?

p.s. we did see a golden eagle fly by several times...a first for me in this area.

Smallie fishing is down in the UP.
Some bass guys are still concerned about the fishing in the main stem but you can't blame that on snakies as the bow hunters are taking care of that.
I have no clue but I do know that I will keep going out to fish. Better than watching the Nats lose another one.

I fished with a friend many years ago who believed that if you caught a fish on your first cast of the day, it would bring bad luck for the rest of the day. It wasn't always true in my experience, but it was often so. So maybe what was at play here is a corollary to that belief. My first TRIP of the year...a fantastic day of fishing for stripers that wore my arms out...was my best first day ever. But every trip since then has been terrible. Guess I might have to wait until 2016 to see improvement...
