Virginia Tech - 4/10-12/2015

I have been looking forward to this weekend for several months!  I went down to Virginia Tech to visit Tyler and go fishing.  I can't think of a better thing to do.  Had so much fun fishing with him for 2 1/2 days.  Drove down Friday morning which left enough time to hit a few trout streams before dark.  Car was loaded and ready for just about any kind of fishing we could think of.

First stop was Craig's Creek.  Stocked but we didn't see much or catch anything

So we moved on to Little Stoney Creek.  It had rained earlier so the creek was running a bit too fast to wade.  But we rock hopped to find some pretty good pools out of the main current.  In just an hour or two we both had 2 nice rainbows.  Tyler caught one of the biggest of the weekend.  I think we estimated about 12 inch wild rainbow

And I got a couple of my own

It is a REALLY beautiful creek

A late dinner at Macadoos, and off to bed.  On Saturday Tyler had arranged to fish with some guys he met on a Smallies fishing board on the New River.  Harry and Robert were really nice guys.

They were fishing for Muskies and Tyler and I were fishing for Smallies (but would take a Musky if one jumped in our laps).  The New River near the Claytor Dam/Radford University is OK, but I think there are better sections.  We fished a 5 mile stretch from about 10-2 and got SKUNKED!!  Not one bite between the 4 of us in 5 miles of river!  I did have a BIG Musky chase my lure out of some wood structure in about 3 feet of water.  Nipped at my Spinnerbait right at the boat and then turned away.  I think I was the only one who even saw a fish.

So Tyler and I got some lunch and quickly headed back to Little Stony Creek.  Tyler got 5-7 (i lost count) and I got 1 (easier to count one).  But at least we weren't skunked for the day!!!!!!!  No pics from me on that day.  I was engrossed in my fishing and Tyler was off up creek.  Called it quits at dark and had dinner at Cabo Fish Taco.  HMMMMM!!!! Outstanding food!

SUnday I had to drive home in the afternoon, but we headed up to Big Stony Creek to fish the lower (unstocked) and upper (stocked) areas.  NADA......Soooooo, time to head back to the dependable Little Stony Creek.  The parking area was full so we parked down the road and fished a lower/flatter area.  I spend most of the time timberbashing while Tyler caught a few more (not sure how many).  These are some pics Tyler sent me of his fish.

Not a fish, but Tyler caught this Red Ent too.

It was a great weekend.  So much fun just tooling around with Tyler to different fishing holes.  VT is a really amazing area for fishing.  Next year Tyler will have his truck and kayak with him......I hope he graduates!!!  I still can't believe we got skunked on The New River.  Next time we are going to have to try a different stretch.

Nice pics and report! Those wild rainbows are so dark compared to the stockies.

Great report! It brings back many a fond memory for me fishing those same areas!! The New can be a mysterious place some days and I remember being skunked there or having 50+ smallie days, you just never know till you go.

I'm really glad you got to fish Little Stoney, that was one of my favorite places to go! Has Tyler gone above the falls yet? It's all native brookies up there and it gets pretty wild. There are about 7 more smaller waterfalls and you are pretty much guaranteed not to see another person. There is also a fire service road that can get you in way up creek but the brookies are super small, like 4", but aggressive for their size!

Re: Virginia Tech - 4/10-12/2015

We got about 1 mile up the trail and planned to go above the waterfall, but someone on the trail said it was another mile to the waterfall and it was already about 6:30pm.  I had a headlight, but still wasn't ready to be out there in the dark (I think the parking lot would have closed also).  I would love to go up past the waterfall next time.   Just need to get an earlier start.  Can you tell me where that fire service road is?

Re: Virginia Tech - 4/10-12/2015

I am pretty sure it is Doe Creek Rd (route 613) off of 460 which goes up to Mountain Lake as well. On the way up you'll see a road (pretty sure it's all gravel at that point) that veers to the left and per google maps it is route 714. I dropped in around a bridge there and walked downstream to the falls, but that was a long haul in the thick brush. There were native brook trout almost as soon as I got in the water though so you don't have to go far if you do it!

Also, while you are you are up there you really should drive past mountain lake and go to wind rock to watch the sun set or camp. In fact if Tyler hasn't camped out there yet he really should. There is a big rock outcropping at the top of the trail out of the parking lot there (about 200 yd hike) and rustic camping all through out. The Appalachian trail crosses near there and there are a number of other trails you can hike like War Spur that aren't terribly long but scenic.

Man, I miss Blacksburg and the mountains!!!

Camping there sounds amazing. Is there decent fishing on Mountain Lake?  Thanks for the info.

Mountain lake does not have good fishing unfortunately. The lake has issues and there is a fault or crack or something in it that has caused it to drain substantially.
