Okeechobee - 3/22

Went down to Florida to visit my family for the weekend and was able to schedule a quick fishing excursion with my Bro-In-Law to Okeechobee on Sunday.  Unfortunately that meant we would be fishing at the end of the weekend pressure, but it didn't matter.....we were fishing!!  Roy just got a new 17ft Tracker.  This was his first trip out on Okeechobee with it.  A great boat for this type of fishing.  We woke up about 5 and got on the water right about sunrise.  The fish are in the middle of spawning so we targeted the beds which we found mixed in the middle of certain kinds of tall grass (not sure the name of it).  We pitched big 8-10 inch worms (looked like big Senkos on steroids) with bullet weights pegged at the hook.  It was a beautiful day.  Not too warm or cold... just about heaven!!  We caught about 16-20 fish in about 4 hours.  Smallest was about 3 lbs and biggest was about 6 lbs.  Nothing huge by Okeechobee standards but constant action and great pullage.  Roy had a really big one on the line, but lost it.  Below are a couple pictures of me with decent fish.  Roy doesn't want a picture unless the fish is pushing 8 lbs or more.

We just got to the spot.  It was actually a chilly ride.  But a great first fish.

No this isn't the same fish as the previous picture.  But it did look like a twin and I did catch it from the same group of weeds.

GATOR!  I saw a huge gator about 150 yds away.  I saw the head back and tail in 3 humps as it was swimming.  I would guess it had to be more than 15 ft long.  This guy was much smaller and closer.
