Took the family to OBX last week and made sure to book a trip with Captain Bryan DeHart - who is based in Manteo -
Hard to believe that it has been fifteen years since I first met Bryan - when I fished with him in 1999 - I think we have fished about 7 times during the years. Two years ago I connected with Ernie for a trip with Bryan - and we had a great day of fishing - those puppy drum we caught in 2012 have grown up since then!
So, leading up to this trip, I learned that Jonathan DeHart, who lives up in our area was also planning to be in OBX that week - so we joined up for a trip, along with my son, Bobby Rae -
The weather was outstanding - and we set out at 9am to fish the incoming tide - which was how the red drum bite was best.
Bryan runs a 23' Maycraft - so there was plenty of casting room for the four of us -
Bryan supplied to gear - we were throwing Johnson gold weedless spoons with Okuma and Fenwick gear - all gear was light tackle - and performed great.
Bryan took us to several of his favorite spots - and about halfway through the trip - we located a very nice "wad" of fish - had to be 200+ 25-28" drum - and they were in 2 feet of water - so they threw a wake - and we were able to sneak up on them -
We all threw our lures - and all four of us hooked up, and landed our fish - a "quadruple hook up!" It was very exciting as you could see the fish turn and hit your lure - and while bringing in the fish in two feet of clear water- there were other drum chasing them - real cool scene.
After that excitement, the school broke up and we continued to drift - and pick up fish steady through out the day -
We also were able to see numerous sea turtles, skates, rays, and frequently other red drum swimming around in the 2-3 water we were fishing in - The wildlife is so spectacular down there.
Hopefully the pics will help show the beauty of these fish -
It was an excellent trip - and the DeHarts are some of the nicest people you ever will meet -
My son goes back to school on Saturday - too bad the summer goes so fast - would not mind driving down to OBX this weekend and chase another school of tailing Reds.....

With a little advance notice and some schedule juggling...I could be a candidate!
Nice job with the reds!
