I have wanted to spend a couple of days exploring the Lower Potomac and St. Mary's Rivers for a long time. While I have fished there with Capts. Brady and Dennis, I wanted to explore on my own. I had mentioned this to Greg and Tyler at one time and they were all in...plus, we could spend the night at Greg's buddy's house which saved us on a hotel room.
Also, many thanks to Scott McGuire for the many tips he provided. We used some and found some productive areas on our own.
We started around 12:30 on Friday ....and as Greg would say, "as usual, Tyler takes the skunk off the boat"!
Then Greg got his skunk off too in a weird way...
....and then I obliged!
Then Tyler gets his 1st redfish ever!
And then this skate!!
We continued to catch fish every place we went but one. Sometimes it was one or two here and there and sometimes it was lots of hits lots of times.
We even went across the Potomac and did great on a nice predictable spot.
After we came back, Greg caught some rods.....
....and Tyler kept catching past dark!
Day one ended later than we wanted but we were satisfied that we caught a LOT of fish even though nothing of size to brag about. After a short night's sleep, we went back at it the next day. Our 1st spot did not produce so we went to the next place. Kinda slow there too until Greg declared, "fish on"!. he brought in this nice 19 incher on a prototype curly tail!
We then kept working and hoping but had a very long and dry spell until Greg said, "let's try that point"!
Glad we did because we caught stripers, reds (Greg's 1st ever!), croaker, perch and a needlefish to boot!
We then followed the semi breaking fish into a cove...we had them cornered! Well, we thought we did. After the initial flurry....NOTHING!!
So we decided to leave....not until we saw this guy battling a big ray on 10lb line!
I decided to stay in the St. Mary's River so not to waste time going across the Potomac. We went to a very secret place and managed a striper and a perch. At least we caught some. Then we went to secret place #2...same place we skunked at the day before. But.....yesterday, we were there at low tide. Tyler saw a creek opening and wondered if we could go in there. Nope...no way....too shallow!
But today we were at high tide so he asked again and we explored. We barely got in and worked some of the creek and I caught a teeny red while Tyler caught a small perch. I was headed out and Greg saw some commotion in the back of the creek but I was nervous to go back there. Tyler asked me to work the other side up front and we did with no love for the effort. But there seemed to be some water back there so we kept working at it and we caught a few fish here and there including another red.
We were now deep in the creek and we had 3-4 feet of water. The place reminded me of Brewer's' Pond off the Severn where Woody caught his 14" monster.
And just like it looked, we started to catch bigger perch.....1st it was and 11+ incher (Tyler)....then it was an almost 12 incher (Greg) and finally...a 12+incher (Ernie....and yes, I whooped it a bit!)!
Not a great number of fish but some very solid and mature beasts!!
We slowly got out of the creek but if we had waited too much longer....it would have been push out time or wait until the next high tide. No way a fiberglass boat gets in/out of there.
Stormy clouds started forming so time to head back....
Simply put....a fabulous 2 days of fishing before Tyler heads out to VA Tech!

This is what I am chasing....
....and this is keeper rockfish alongside the 14+" beast!
Woody Tillery, maker of the Woody Lures I use, caught this one a couple of years back.

Had a great trip with Ernie and Tyler. Piney Point has SOOO many good fishing places. The highpoint for me was watching Ernie catch that big WP. Yes, we all hooped it up a bit when he brought that in. When Tyler and I brought in the first 2 big WP, Ernie was very happy for us but you could tell he REALLY wanted a big one for himself too. He got it. I think he told Tyler to get the net in the water before he even finished setting the hook!
Tyler and I got our first Reds which was a goal this trip and I think we counted 7 or 8 different species of fish we all caught throughout the trip. Great weather (couldn't have asked for better), Great fishing and Great people. Everything you could wish for on a fishing trip.

Awesome Gents!
I was out at there Yesterday for my first time. There was a kayak fishing meet and greet launching out of Dennis Point Marina. Everyone was catching big WP.... something must be in the water LOL. To my surprise, I caught a 15.75" Spec! Best part was I caught it not even 3 minutes after I launched!
Ernie that WP is HUGE!! It may be a citation bro!!

Mustafa- we saw 4-5 yaks fishing off Webster Field around lunch time. Was that you guys? I think we were close to you.
Good on you for the speck! We tried but never found them.

Yup that was our group... The Speck was a complete surprise. Only two other yakers out of 20 caught one each. From the locals it seems that last week was the first they started sighting them. It's been a tough year because of the fish kill...
