Kitty Hawk, NC (Memorial Day Weekend 2014)

Spent the past two weekends down in NC - the first trip solo, then with the whole family for Memorial Day weekend.

The fish have finally moved up the Albermarle sound and the action is now a lot more reliable in Kitty Hawk bay. Plenty of mid-slot puppy drum available and also had some fat catch-and-release speckled trout mixed in. All fish have come on popping corks with gulp curly tail minnows - both chartreuse and white have been working well. The puppy drum are also thick at times in the wash on the south side of the piers. Folks have been catching on jigs when the water is clear but mine came on shrimp last weekend when the water was muddy.

I took my girls down to Oregon Inlet yesterday morning and found some bottom fishing action for them drifting in 15' of water. My oldest caught a nice 18" flounder and little sis soon followed suit with a 15" grey trout - both on shrimp/squid combo. A 20"+ black drum followed up and hit her line as she was checking bait right by the boat, but then came unbuttoned just as fast. That would have been a real test for her pink barbie rod!

Beautiful weekend on the beach too - finished each afternoon off with swims in the ocean. Still slightly brisk at around 68 degrees but not at all uncomfortable after the initial dip. Good times!
