Big buck 12-27

My neighbor Dan went hunting this afternoon while I played good husband, son, and father.  He shot a big body buck with a 8-pt rack that did not do the body size justice.  He called me around 4 pm and said it was too big and heavy to load in his X-Terra by himself.  He eventually found someone on the adjacent property to help him load it so that I would not have to drive the 50 minutes or so to help him.  We skinned it out in my garage.  The hams would barely fit in my basement fridge to age 3 days.  The back straps were massive.  Here are 2 pics.  It looked to weigh around 195-200 lbs.

Re: Big buck 12-27

At first when I saw the picture I was thinking "what does he mean massive buck". Once I saw the hanging picture that really puts it in to perspective. What was the fat layer like on it? Looking at it, I would say that he was a young deer. Maybe 2.5 years old? Neck isn't swollen either. Did he shoot it on a farm?

Nice stripper canoe in the background.

Yes, looked to be 2 1/2 years old from horn thickness and tooth wear.  Not much fat on him because no crops near that spot.  Neck was swollen somewhat but difficult to see in the pics.

The canoe is one of those handmade ones from a kit.  Had it about 15 years now.

That is impressive that it was 200 of muscle and come from woods and be that young.  The few heavy deer I have taken have been that way from good acorn mast years. One was a 135 lb doe (dressed) that had better than an inch of fat on her. I could barely get a grip on the skin on her belly to start dressing her.
