Briery Creek Lake 9-20

So on my way to races this weekend I was able to stop and fish for about three hours in the middle of the day.  First catch was an 8" bluegill.  Then a 16" bass on a crankbait.  Then I saw some fish chasing bait along the shore in a shallow cove area with lots of small lilypads.  So tossed a horny toad and right away I was getting blowups but they just weren't getting it.  I flubbed a cast.  Popped it up over a branch and it landed halfway back to me and the line was wrapped around the rod tip.  While I tried to get that sorted a bass grabbed it.  That one was about 17.5" and 2.5lbs.  No more blowups there but when moving through the pads I could see the wakes from a bunch of good size fish nearby.  As I was heading back I caught one more small bass on a crankbait.

I'll likely be stopping there on the way home and sleeping in my truck in the parking lot and get in some more fishing Monday morning.  I might also check out a ramp on the James River and try for smallies if it looks good.

Re: Briery Creek Lake 9-20

Got in a little bit of fishing last night before it got too dark to see what I was doing.  With a crankbait I hooked up with a bass in the 4-5lb range but it jumped and came undone.

I got started a little bit before 7am today.  It was breezy to start and by the time I was done it was blowing more like 15mph despite the forecasted 8mph.  That was a big reason I quit when I did.

I started by heading to the area I left on Friday.  Along the way I got one small one on a crankbait.  At the pads the activity wasn't there but there was this small one there to take my horny toad.

Then I headed straight across the lake to the west side to check it out.   About 100 yards out from shore it got really shallow, only about 1ft deep.  I spooked a large catfish that was hanging out in the area.  There was a lone patch of lily pads out there too.  I tossed the horny toad all the way over the patch and began the retrieve.   After clearing the near side of the pads it got hit.  My eyes got big and I waited just a bit before setting the hook and it took hold.  I had 65lb braid on so I didn't take any time reeling it in.

I think it may be my PB.  My scale wasn't working right but surely it's in the 5lb range.  Not real sure of the length of my other big bass.  According to the Texas bass length to weight conversion table a 21" bass is 5.49lb.

I checked out the James River by Rt15 for a little bit and did get one fish.  It looked like a really good area for smallies so I was expecting more.

Nice large mouths.

James has some big fish in it.  Now, they should be hanging around their winter haunts feeding in area's close by.
