7-16-13, Block Island RI

Due to a business meeting, I needed to be in CT for a week but there was a window......

My friend Steve has a place in Charlestown RI so we went up there on Monday night and made plans to fish Tuesday morning.

It's really hot up here (no different than DC but they are not used to it).

We were up and at 'em 0530 and by 0650 we were fishing the rips just east of Block.

By 0711, Steve had already caught two nice stripers. Both were just short of the legal size which is 28". We were in 35-40 feet of water, right before the rip line.

Steve was using a 7" Rapala shallow swimmer (trebles) which I don't like but Steve obviously did. A few minutes later I had my 1st one on and that one was another cookie cutter 27 incher.

You won't see pictures of my fish....operator error on Steve's part. Oh we'll....

We then saw some fish rolling so I went to the Rhodie special and got many hits on top before finally hooking up with a nice 29 incher. Then I got slammed again and the fish tarponed out of the water....it was a 9-10 pounder.....blue fish....32 incher...my biggest ever! What a battle!

Steve continued to catch them....up to 32 inches....he never changed out his lure. By 1000 the tide had stopped running and the bite died so we headed back in laughing like little kids. Water temps were 67-68 degrees. It was hot but we had a nice breeze which was cooled by the water.

There were very few boats fishing the area we fished and it was another spectacular day. We were very fortunate to have calm seas.

This one may have been mine....

1. You always seem to find that window
2. Quoting Sonny & Cher, "The beat goes on". One personal best after another. Hope your good fortunes continue.

Bob- Debbie says the same thing but I always look ahead for these opportunities. We were blessed with great weather and the last bit of the outgoing tide.  Both Steve and I had meetings in the PM which we took in the car.

Curly- that chopper would have been headed for a smoker if we were staying there so he is back swimming. Great fight (on my 4 pc med. travel rod) and a surpisingly spectacular jump out of the water.
