Potomac x2 6/29 & 6/30

I had the chance to out twice this weekend and spend some time on the Potomac. On Saturday I fished out of Aqualand by the 301 bridge with Bob (Osprey) and my cousin Jack. While things were slower than Bob's last trip out there we still had a blast and caught a ton of fish! We were looking for rockfish and redfish, but we weren't picky and had a lot of fun catching catfish! We caught blues, channels, and bullhead catfish, rockfish, white perch, spot, and REDFISH! Well I didn't catch any, but my cousin did. I gave him the only redfish magic I had and that payed off! However, after this trip we are going to take Bob's lead and call them catfish magic! We brought a 24" rockfish caught on a live spot, a 19" rock caught on a cut perch strip, and a 18.25" redfish for dinner.

On Sunday I went out to Pohick Bay bay with AbuMasgouf and our other friend Jimmy. The water was heavily stained and the morning showers made things interesting but we found a few fish. I caught 4 bass largest going 19" and missed a few snakeheads with one bite off.

Re: Potomac x2 6/29 & 6/30

It was an awesome experience today! Good to fish with Michael after a long time!

Launched around 7:45am right after low tide.

It was a really slow day, probably because of the snakehead tournament yesterday and through the night. Last time I was out, I couldn't get in the groove of this type of "bass" fishing. I haven't fished for bass in a while but today I decided to get back into what used to always work for me. Weightless Texas Rigged Senkos (and finness worms) on a Gamakatsu G-Lock Work hook (5/0). This time I was feeling the bottom and feeling the worm go through the weeds and finally landed my first Snakehead! It happened so fast, I didn't even realize that I achieved a goal I set out this year. I looked at our friend Jimmy after 5 minutes from landing the fish and I was like "Dude! I just caught a snakehead!" It hadn't hit me until that point!

The rest of the day was really slow with hard rain on and off. I managed two pesky LMB (about 13"-14") back to back right when we were getting ready to leave around 2pm.

The Snakehead hit the green pumpkin with red speckles (BPS brand). I only had one on me that I lost. I then started using the baby bass with chartreuse tail (BPS brand). The bass hit that like mad! Chased it right to the kayak.

Here are some pics that Jimmy took and the one I took of the SH on the measuring board...

I really wanted to Masgouf my first Snakehead but the weather was soo finicky I wasn't sure if it was going to pour while I was Masgoufing it (the whole roasting process takes close to an hour, with 30-45 minutes of actual roasting time). So I decided to fillet it and grill it. OMG it's such a tasty fish!!

I did split the head just for the sake of practice and its manageable if you have a very sharp stiff knife (like a carving knife). If you pierce the knife straight down the skull, it'll go through, then move the knife down and pierce again, and again until you go down the whole skull. Then it's easy to cut the skull open and spread it. Next Snakehead will definitely be Masgoufed!

Congrats on that NSH Mustafa! I was hoping that you would get one so you could Masgouf it....I will anxiously await for that to happen. Yes, that is a tasty fish. I got 2 so far this year, a 5.5 and a 13.5. I had lots of filets in the freezer...that is, until two of my boys came over and cleaned me out.....they love NSH!

Re: Potomac x2 6/29 & 6/30

Saturday was a good day and I enjoyed being around Michael and Jack. I basically pointed out two spots, said go get em, and they did. There were a lot of fish caught even if most of them had whiskers. Glad they got a meal out of the trip.

After 7 + hours baking on the river yesterday there wasn't enough Geritol to get me out a second day. There's truth to the saying about youth being wasted on the young. Glad you had a good day 2.

Funny you said that. My little guys are not big eaters but boy did they love NSH! My oldest asked for seconds and thirds!

We need to get into them in July Ernie!
