Pohick 6/9

Launched from Pohick at about 6:15am and only had a few hours to fish as I had some rowing stuff going on at the Occoquan.  This was my first time out of Pohick and I thought it was awesome.  It was really cool being by the lily pads and constantly hearing the snakeheads going crazy attacking things and splashing.  I was hoping to hook into one but wasn't that lucky.  I did get these two nice bass, though!  I kept them on a stringer and sometimes they would go crazy and start jumping out of the water and freaking out.  Shortly there after, I would see a snakehead close by.  The bigger one weighed in at 4.8 but I haven't mastered holding a scale and a camera at the same time.

That night I cooked them up in a different way... took a crab cake recipe and used fish instead of crab, essentially.  Made a few other small tweaks to help it along but it turned out REALLY good.  My girlfriend is not a huge fish fan so I need to think of clever ways if I want her to eat them smile

Nice catch Billy, and a good-looking feast there.

Many of us on this forum prefer to release the largemouth, especially the bigger ones, in order to allow the species to propagate and in turn protect that resource for years to come. However, as a licensed fisherman, you are well within your rights to keep your daily limit.

Next time, please consider letting the big one go. You will get a lot more cred from your fellow fisherman if you do. If bringing some fish home to eat is your goal, consider targeting and keeping snakeheads, stripers, crappie or catfish instead. Most of these species are much more plentiful, and in my opinion make much better table fare.

On a side note, we also spent Sunday in Pohick and had a phenomenal day. Here is a pic of our best one. As always, I released her after a quick photo to swim free and be caught again.

Yeah, I don't usually keep bass but the girlfriend wanted to try it so I decided to give it a go.  Didn't realize people were opposed to it around here smile

Re: Pohick 6/9

In my opinion, bass is a lowly table fare fish. I have tasted it a few times and never liked it. Tasted like mud.

A 3-4lb channel cat would be the 1st choice and then snakehead, crappie, striper.... in that order.

I tried a bass once.  I'll stick to cats and saltwater fish.

Ernie's right about the 3-4lb cats.  Smaller and it's not really worth the effort, and when they get bigger they get fatty.

Personally, I prefer a nice salmon. Just haven't found a good place to catch them around here...except for maybe Wegmans.

I detest farm raised salmon....mainly because of how they are raised and that they are injected with dye.

But wild Salmon?  Mmmmmm good!

Re: Pohick 6/9

I find the release / non kill of LGMouth to be a good karma thing.. if a client keeps them, then next trip I struggle just to catch fish. There are certainly enough to cull a few with out hurting the population.

Besides better table fare is out there. Try catfish filets with Tony Chacheres on the grill. She will love that.

Sorry, I should have said "wild caught" as that's the only kind my wife allows me to bring home.

Re: Pohick 6/9

Has anyone tried snakehead fishing with live bait?  I feel like they wouldn't be able to resist a shad cut in half sitting right next to the weeds big_smile
