Algonkian on June 5

Got a chance to meet and fish with John (jffoley) today for a few hours at Algonkian. John wanted to interrupt his job search to put a few hours of fun into his day. And what better way to have some fun than to go kayak fishing.

As you can see, it was a beautiful day to be out on the water...great weather and no other boats or jet skis.

John scored early with this nice catfish.

Followed by this nice smallie. Between us we got about 6 similar sized smallies over the next 2 hours. With a few bluegills thrown in too.

Then this big girl decided to attack my 3" Magic Stick on a splitshot rig.

She measured out at 19". Full bodied and beautiful coloring.

Scale showed her at 3 lb and 9 oz. Probably my biggest smallie on the Potomac.

All in all, it was a successful trip. Great to meet a new fishing partner and to spend a beautiful day on the Potomac.

Re: Algonkian on June 5

Thanks for the invitation, Bruce! Very nice meeting you. It was really great fishing a new part of the Potomac. For whatever reason I haven't fished Algonkian. I've been to the park a few times but probably didn't get on the water since I couls only go on weekends when it would be busy with boaters, jet skis, etc.

Anyways, +1 on the beautiful day along with decent fishing and a new friendship! This "retirement preview" (aka unemployment!) is starting to look up!

Nice work gents....especially that almost 4 pounder!

Every time I fish with Bruce I get reminded of his "no fish on weekends" rule. He just hates crowds and has 5 other days to fish.

Time to go fishin' again!

Re: Algonkian on June 5

nice work guys and great smallie bruce.  I fished from the bank (up river from the launch) for a half hour before softball last night ..... nada.  I've never launched my kayak there ..... did you head up or downstream ..... MD or VA side.  I'm not familiar with fishing that area so any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks and take care.

Houli,
I've only fished there twice, so I don't have much to offer. Most of our fish were caught around the islands upstream from the launch ramp. I liked this section of the river because it was deep enough and safe enough to peddle my Hobie there. Avoid the area between the islands if you are peddling as it is a bit shallow. Any summertime smallie lure should work.
