Bev Carroll had not fished with me for several years. He wanted to go today. The weathermen said 30-50 chance of rain. They said the same last week which caused me to cancel and it barely rained. We didn't get wet today until about 11 AM when we called it quits.
The ramp was a bit lively this morning, there were lots of different boats and a bass tourney. High tide was around 2:30 AM so with the high water, the current screaming.
So we headed up river but 1st things 1st. Bev wanted to light a stogie, something he always enjoyed when we fished together. Our goal today was to catch shad on the ultra light stuff.
We stopped at white sign but the action there was slow. A few guys were slinging cut bait but I only saw one smallish striper come on to a boat. So we headed up river to try a few places. On the way, we ran in to Mike Bailey who was fishing very close to the Fletcher's entrance. he had caught a few Americans but he said it was slow. He said the incoming was better as it slowed down the current. Well, tough luck for us because I could not stay for that to happen.
We stopped at the hole where Bruce, Curly and I hammered the hickories a couple of weeks back. All could muster were 2 little white perch.
No shad!
But then, on the ultras light noodle rod with 4 lb line, I get a hit and it is game on. A few minutes later, after a nice net job from Bev, this 7 pound blue cat comes aboard.
What a blast!
Not too many minutes later, the same ting happened to Bev!
He had the St. Croix Lite stick with 6 pound line which is what this guy weighed.
Watching Bev fight this guy on such light tackle was worth the trip!
Both of these fish hit a green shad dart.
Then, Bev got hit again. This time it was a big fish.
He fought it for almost 30 minutes. I have some video and will try to post it later.
As the fish was wearing Bev down, he somehow got behind a rock because we could no longer feel him move. I have been there and I knew what was about to happen. Ping! Done! Over! Thirty minutes and we never saw it....Bev was worn out and we had a great laugh.
We threw some jigs and swinbaits for a bit in hopes of enticing a striper to hit but that did not happen. We even trolled a bit from Walker's Point to Spout Run as the rain was staring to come down. Zippo!
We then fished (metal) the white perch honey hole just above Spout Run. Zippo! Nada!. The screen was lit up and we were blanked.
We decided to head back as the rain was getting harder.
They had a Hawaii Canoe race in Georgetown.
We got off the water and called it a good day despite the lack of action.
I am not sure if it's over at Fletcher's, there are still lots of herring....it has been a good year for them.
I think Bev wants to go again....maybe later for the shallow water white perch action!

Great day, guys. Makes the rain seem ok at the end of a successful trip...

Yep....I consider anytime I can get out a successful trip. You know the laughs and stories will be there. Bev caught a 13" perch a few years back and he was still talking about it.
There were only about 10-12 of the red row boats out which seemed very low for a Saturday. Maybe the forecast scared them away.

Sounds like a great time even if the target fish weren't coorperating. The 30 minute battle sounds epic....that'll get anyone motivated!

Great report. Do you think the one that got away was also a cat?

We were thinking cat or carp but it was in the same area where we caught those fat cats.
I just think that he was behind the rocks most of the time. I have caught 'em before while jigging. At 1st, you think you are snagged on a rock. Then they begin to move and you gain on them. Then, they get between the rocks and just lay there. if they wrap the line around a rock, it will "ping". With 4 lb line, we had no change to move him.

Looks like the cats are chasing the shad up & trying to feed.
Nice outing

Great report! Glad you got out despite the rain!
These weather guys really annoyed me this past weekend. Saturday was a lesser chance of rain than Sunday which was around 70%. Changed all my plans to fish Saturday with my sons and what happens? It rains on Saturday and is dry on Sunday. Lesson learned... if you plan to fish... just go fish!
