Today, I had the pleasure of fishing with Bruce Robertson and we hired Andy Andrrzejewski for a day of Potomac River fishing. Andy has been guiding for many years and fishing with him was on my bucket list.
He picked us up at Leesylvania and on to the fishing grounds we went.
The 1st place was a very fishy place but the tide was very high and we only got a few taps. But we kept at it and finally Bruce took the stink off the boat!
And he caught the 2nd one as well....
....while I was just spectating.
We had a beautiful day with little wind, flat calm river, many eagles to be seen...it does not get much better than this!]\
Here was Andy trying to get Bruce to believe that this was a 3 pounder!
Bruce has fished with Andy many times including for smallies on Lake Erie. Theses guys are friends and have a good rapport. The banter was great and I was quick to jump in.
The Marines!
Bruce kept catching.....
...but I started to creep up including a very nice one that got off the boat as I was just going to haul him in. Our fish were caught on spinnerbaits, Baby 1 minus and senkos (wacky and T-rigged).
Then we spooked a very large snakehead and I started to get exited. I wanted him. Andy's crew had caught a nice 6.5 pounder the day before.
I was throwing the Baby 1 minus and I oot hit...not a slam but a solid take. I told the guys that I either had a record bass or a nice snakehead. I said that because the fish wasn't thrashing like a snakehead normally does. But as I got him closer, we saw a huge head and then we knew it was game on!. the fish was not happy and was doing everything it could to get off the lure (which he had inhaled)! Andy did a great net job and I was exited!
The NSH measure out at 32" and 13 pounds 9 ounces which is now my personal best! Caught on 14lb Trilene XLT and a St. Croix Premier spinning rod! Thanks Andy!
After we settled down, we caught a few more bass....
This was a fun day. We caught about a dozen bass and the big snakie.....
While the fishing was not red hot, the company was great and I learned a lot from Andy. He is a class act!
When I got home, a couple of neighbors came over to watch the fileting.
I tried to ice down the fish.....
.....they got a trill as the fish was still active with is sides missing.
And here is a good shot at his mouth with the ingested lure.
Great day out on the water....can't wait to do it again!

That's a good one dude. Must've been one heck of a fight. Way to go!

It was a nice tussle but I don't think they fight as hard in colder water ....but It was fun! We could not believe that he didn't break us off they way he inhaled that lure. I waited until tonight to retrieve it.
I saw that beast move with his sides missing.....

I was gonna say, you are having a great year for fishing already Ernie! I see a 14" WP coming this year!
That is a humongous snakehead! I can't believe he managed to get that lure that far down his throat. There is no way he was getting off unless that line broke. My friend caught one on a Red Eye Shad like that one time. I couldn't do anything but crack him open to get it out.

It was a beautiful day to be out on the water with Ernie and Andy. Non-stop stories, banter, and reflections about fishing and old friends. I'm sure we missed some bites/fish because of our conversations. But it was fun.
Most fish came near the edge of weed beds, especially once the out-going tide got moving well. Ernie forgot to mention that he had the biggest bass of the day do a self-release near the boat. Fish looked to be 4-5lbs., but who knows...
Regarding the snakie, it was certainly the biggest one I've seen, and looking down its throat with all those big teeth was almost scary. Glad Ernie didn't try to get the lure out until after the fish was fileted.

He just inhaled it. The hit was not violent, the line went slack and then the freight train started to run.
When I was getting ready to filet it he was still squirming. His head was as hard as the slate that I had him on. No way a mini bat would have stunned him.
