3-23-13, Potomac River

I met Bob (Osprey) and Andrew (theguvnor) at 9 AM at Gravelly. Quite a few boat trailers there, seems there was a bass tourney being held.

We decided to head up river and after dodging many rowing crews we got past Key Bridge.

There were 4 other boats with us, they were all catfishing. One boat was using a sibiki to catch bait but they had no luck.

We jigged for a bit but had no hits so we decided to head for warmer water as the water temps were 40-42 from the 14th St Bridge all the way to just past Spout Run.

Did I say it was a little chilly?

So down river we went and entered the Washington Channel. We threw the kitchen sink at the 1st rock point but nada....it was looking like a skunk day.

Andrew then said, "let's go to Blue Plains". Gee....my favorite place!  tongue

On the way, we got boarded by the Coasties....they were outstanding and we had no infractions so a few minutes later, we were on our way.

The wind had really picked up and we had some whitecaps on the river but that wind would be to our benefit at the stink hole, I mean Blue Plains.

There were 4-5 boats in a tourney who were all bass fishing but at this point, we just wanted to catch anything.

Plus, Andrew wanted a stinky shad for Lake Anna where he was fishing later in the day. He got it! But it was snagged so not a legal catch.

Just as we were going to leave, I caught this carp looking guy!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/004-49_zps151e6f49.jpg

Not such a good day of fishing, but a good time for sure. Then......as we were leaving, this guy catches a striper on a hard swim bait....

.....of course, we decide to stay!

Andrew scores 1st but it's another shad....

.......now he has some good, stinky bait for Lake Anna.

A few minutes later, Bob sits down for a rest. I said, "we need a fish!". Andrew says, "fish on...and a nice one!".

He fought it well....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/009-30_zpsb7f7da7e.jpg

....and Bob did a masterful job of netting it!

27" and 8.5lbs! Nice!!!!    big_smile

We did get a couple of other hits but our day was made. A nice striper was caught and it was Andrew's biggest to date!

We called it at 2pm and went on back to the ramp....

You hit the nail right on the head. I had just two taps all day and had a good time. I've caught plenty of fish, but I never tried fishing in a giant goldfish bowl. Never expected that striper Andrew caught to be out where it was. Bottom line, I learned a few new things and spent the day with good company.

I wonder if that fish I caught was a giant goldfish?

Sure looked snowy out there this afternoon....now, it just started. Looking forward to Friday; hoping for some good weather and to do some more exploring and catching.

Re: 3-23-13, Potomac River

What an amazing day on the river thanks to Ernie. Thanks again! When the striper first hit the jerk bait, I thought it was a Kitty until the drag sprung to life. Ernie maneuvered the boat into the perfect position to land her with ease and Bob netted her perfectly. All in all it was a team effort. I know that either by boat, kayak or inner tube, I'll be fishing Blue Plains again, asap!! After we pulled back into Gravely, I had the grand idea to brave 95 and hit Lake Anna for the evening striper bite at Dike #3 with a couple of mates. So after running home to take the wee-man for a walk, I shot south. Got to Dike #3 at 515pm, threw on the waders and managed to get one decent LMB and a baby striper. The highlight of Anna was having a giant Cormorant swim into my leg while standing waist deep. Almost gave me a heart attack. Once again, thank you Ernie and Bob for helping me to land my largest striper by far!

Great report and congrats on the striper.

Oh, and what are the orange things in the water? Goldfish or something?
