2-23-13, Jupiter driftfishing

Originally, there was going to be 6 of us fishing on the Black Dog for a 1/2 day of drift fishing the reefs just outside of the Jupiter inlet. Bit, as life would have it, only two of us made the trip. Probably a good thing since the winds were up and the sea was a bit dicey!

This was my 1st time on the Black Dog but Capt. Bill and his mate Chad were excellent!

So out of the inlet we went....

My buddy Joe as we started...

He would not let me take a picture after he sat down from rocking and rolling. We had several of the crew fall as they were trying to move about the boat as it was a bit rough. I was in heaven!

I will say now that the fishing was not good for some of the 10 patrons but I caught a lot of fish and many species! These are the ones I remember, you can try to match 'em up!

Black margate

Triggerfish

Banded Rudderfish

Porgy, two types

Yellowtail snapper

Mutton snapper

Vermillion snapper

Tube fish

Ocean perch

Grunt

These pelicans were smart....they landed on the boat knowing they would get scraps....

The banded rudderfish was outside the slot so he went back in.

I threw back a keeper yellow tail snapper....don't know why as they are my favorite to eat.

We lost a big keeper trigger boat side (we had a bit of a tangle). I was disappointed as they taste good.

Some of the porgies I caught were inedible...too much iodine in them.

The black margate was also inedible because of a worm he carries. All other margates are edible.

Anyway, a diverse day for sure despite the rockin'!

As we came in, I took a few more shots....

The egrets.....

....and pelicans are domesticated.

They know they will get fed. They are scared of NO one!

That looks like a great day!  I love days when you are catching lots of species and never know what is going to be on the end of the line.  Right across from the Jupiter light house is the Squared Grouper Tiki Bar.  Best place in town to hang out (outside only) and have a few beverages.  That fish cooking on the grill makes my mouth water!

This is exact;y what the Capt. said. I had a great fight with the Banded Rudderfish.....part of the Amberjack family. Reef donkeys they call them.

BTW, this boat uses fairly light tackle for the drift fishing. I did too.

I know where it is....we tried going to Guanabanas but the wait was 2 hours at 6pm!

Great report and pics! What a cool variety of fish.

I recognized all but the last one so I assume that's the Black Margate. It looks like a cross between a porgy and a black drum. Very cool.

Yep...you called it! You never really know what you are going to catch off the reefs. There is some skill involved (to catch more) but when they are feeding....look out.

As I mentined, the Capt. apologized for the slow fishing and rough ride. Hmmmm...can't wait for a good day big_smile !
