I started to write this report while I was sitting in a meeting listening to the finance minister from the Brazil Post on Monday, 2/25....finally, I am completing it.
It all started with the fact that I had to attend a conference in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico...hey, someone has to do it! he fact that I speak Spanish helped me get the nod over a few others. I went down on Saturday the 23rd and actually got a chance to throw the fly rod on the beach for a bit.....
The water was a bit cold (maybe low to mid 60s) but I didn't care....it was about 74 degrees out and I was fishing without long johns! I did not catch anything in the surf. For Sunday, I had rented a panga guide who was recommended by a friend of a friend....
....the idea was to do some fly fishing for Pacific fishies, so off we went!! Captain Alberto said we would 1st troll to see if we could raise some fish. His equipment was old and heavy. As a matter of fact, he would make most of our river/bay stuff look like ultra light trolling tackle! It was hilarious! He had two 6/0 Penn reels on the fattest rods I have seen!!! Anyway, we moved around a bit and even saw a few fells throwing iron in the surf.....
....I have no idea if they were catching fish. We trolled a bit and one of the rods goes down....well not really, the fish just kinda flopped around and we noticed it was a ciera mackerel at the end of the line....
....a delicacy for cebiche!! Well, the skunk was off and we kept fishing; then I looked back and there is another fish flopping in the water. This time it as a BARACUDA....a baby Mexican 'cuda.....
A few minutes later we get another hit and this time it's a California needlefish.....
Here's the bottom line.....we caught fish, 3 new species for my records; cierra mackeral, California needlefish and the baby Mexican barracuda. But honestly, I never really got any pullage using such stout equipment.
The fishing was slow due to some cold, dirty water that had moved in. There were 30 or so boats when we started but they headed in early.
But I am not complaining! It was 73-74 degrees and I got to to get out on the water for 5 hours ....even got to see a whale! And I did make about 30 fly casts to some breaking bait to no avail.

PS- I did manage to catch a couple of the fish using a fly....the Capt tied my fly as a trailer on a huge diving plug!
