Lower Potomac, 1st Hobie adventure, 10-5-12

Look familiar?

That's the bridge on the front page of http://www.pacemakerfishing.com/

Bob Morgan and I were on the water shortly after 7 to do some Hobie yak fishin' in his home waters.

It took me a little time to get used to this new system but by the end of the day I was hooked!

Speaking of hooked, that's what Bob was doing as he was catching quite a few keeper stripers while I fooled around with my yak. He can tell you some of what he did.

I did catch a few small stripers but then this guy came aboard.

It is so good seeing these guys around. I wonder what next year will bring?

At the same place, I hooked into a nice fish that towed me around fr a few seconds and then went under the boat and poof...line break!

I also caught a keeper striper that I laid down next to me so we where the tape measure is on the side of the Hobie,. As I got the camera ready, he did a back flip and back in the water he went!

I told you Bob was hooking and catching!!

At 1st, I did not catch much under that structure but them I figured it out and many WP came aboard....

That last one was 11"! I am sure he has older and bigger siblings fishing with him. A place to explore next year!

This guy gave me a nice tussle on the Lite rod I was using....

The river was flat calm and the weather was perfect. Can't ask for any more than that. Except....a quick stop on the way home for some ribs at T & J BBQ!

About the Hobie. While I still need to make a few adjustments and put on some things, I was in the seat from 7am-2pm and I was very comfortable. It's an outstanding boat!

The plan was to catch the last of the incoming tide at first light to try top water. It was a week after the full moon, so hopefully they'd be over feeding at night and be hungry. For once the weatherman was wrong and there was no wind..... perfect.

While Ernie was checking out his Hobie bells and whistles I hurried to where the fish should be waiting. It wasn't as good as it should have been, but it was a lot better than it has been. There were a lot of just shorts with 2 just barely keepers at the first spot. By the time E caught up there were only smalls biting on the surface. Switched to sea shads on a 1/4 oz jighead for the rest of the day. They only wanted chartreuse. Considering the tide was well on it's way out and the sun was high I thought we did OK the rest of the day. The structure Ernie referred to was a large dock that was built to unload coal imported from Africa, guess ours isn't good enough. It's been a disappointing structure for fishing, but I did get my first striper from it and my best of the day. Ernie hasn't gotten over his Sept. perch chase and when he saw his first there he immediately changed gears (and lures) and started bailing them. I heard his hoops and hollers when he caught his 2 biggest. All fish swam away except for the one that came home to dinner.

It was a beautiful day to be out on the yaks, and we even caught fish.

A beautiful day indeed....that yak is nice! Bob's is really tricked out nicely.

At one point, with the water so calm, I just sat there and drifted for a bit, no fishing. It was quite relaxing.....

Yep. Those Hobies are awesome fishing machines. I bought a Hobie Revolution 11 in May and couldn't be happier. Hands free fishing and exercise at the same time!

Looks like a great first outing Ernie! What are you thinking about adding to the boat? Do you have a truck or how do you transport it? When's the next trip?

I fished a similar area around the 301 bridge yesterday and we did pretty well to get our three man limit, lots of small fish around still but we found a few footballs! We all caught our own keepers which made my girlfriend happy to hold her own. The best part for me... she cooked fish for the first time!

That looks good! Good job on the keepers. Normally I don't like baked fish but I may need to make an exception....recipe?

Initially I will add a FF and get an external mount. I need to add one rod holder and maybe an anchor system. I had one on the Big Game and rarely used it. I can clip on the anchor rope almost anywhere.

The yak has wheels and it fits in my truck perfectly without me having to take the wheels off. I had no issues getting the yak off and on by myself. Getting the wheels off the yak is more of a chore though....

I guess I will need a flag but not sure about a light. I generally will not fish when it is dark.

Great report. Nice to see all the puppy drum being caught in the bay this year.

Redfish, looks like your woman did a great job with the fillets!
