Labor Day Weekend Report

Had 13 guests down to my house on the Piankatank River. Arrived late Wed night and had few drinks. OK a few too many for the ride out to bay was bit rough. Broke a flip up seat on a big wave. But we where able to setup on a good outgoing and began to bail sharks. Then a southern ray the size of a VW hit and almost spooled me. Kept so busy did not take any pics. No big drum but we got some major pullage. Friday we headed up the Dragon began flipping edges and scored many puppy drum and a bunch of LGMouth. Other scored bowfin, puppy drum and LGMouth. Here are pics from the Dragon.

So later that evening we head out from my dock and continue the quest for drum spots as we have a little spot count tourney among us.

Trout where caught but most where small the next two evenings.

On Sunday we headed again to the bay and got 25 sharks and 4 southern rays. A few blue fish too.

But the spot count was mine till late Sunday when a 15 spot puppy was caught and left my 23 lead in the dust of second place. Winner got a nice prize and lots of respect.

Today I went all fly and got four more puppy drum and a 8 lb blue cat.

Re: Labor Day Weekend Report

I really enjoyed T's layed back style and his company on the last day. I have a bunch of pics of sharks and rays but can not find them.

Cool. If I didn't know better I'd say you were fishing in Louisiana.

Re: Labor Day Weekend Report

I drove 5.5 hours down from NJ on Saturday after some motorcycle races in order to be there.  I'm glad I came down.  It was great to finally meet Mike and then to fish with him on Monday.   I went out Sunday morning with Steve B. and we headed up the Dragon.  At our first stop he said we'd be able to catch some bowfin.   After just a few casts of a white spinnerbait I had one on, my first ever.  I let that one shake off at the side of the boat.   We both caught several here before heading further up and forking to the left.  I like catching these except for the mangled spinner bait part.  I lost that spinnerbait to something else when my swivel broke at the barrel.

In the narrow fork Steve started catching some small LMB.  At the furthest point we went I briefly had a good LMB on senko.  Then I pulled in a sub-12" one before Steve got one that may have been the one I missed.    Crossing over to the other fork we got into some more bowfin.  I caught one and had a big one follow the spinnerbait to the side of boat and nipping at it.   On the way out I got another hard hit and thought it was a bowfin.  Turned out to be a feisty striper, 14-16".   I finished the day with my first ever drum and a spot.

The problem with small sharks is they come in so green that you need to wait a bit before hook removel.

One almost 3 foot long I held too close to remove the hook whipped me in the privates.. dang that hurt..

Re: Labor Day Weekend Report

Who's that guy in the green shirt and tan hat? He looks awfully familiar!

Awesome! I see that I was in this forum before I was actually a member of this forum tongue LOL!

That was the best weekend I have had for a long time and definitely one I will remember forever! Filled with first time experiences!

Speaking of the Blue fish... if anyone is interested this is what I did with it:

Looking forward to meeting others in this group!

Mustafa- I was told that you were "hooked" on salty water!

Good times are always had on Capt. Mike's boat(s)!

Oh man! Hooked is an understatement!! I dream about Salt water fishing!  lol LOL!!

And yes Capt. Mike is awesome! I also met Dave S. and Steve C. and they are a riot to be on a boat with!

I'm still new to fishing, so I would love the opportunity to keep learning... So if anyone is going out for some salt water fishing and would like some company, I would be interested to come along!

If the weather is good I'll probably do some salty kayak fishing in Ocean City this coming weekend. I might have an empty kayak too.

Re: Labor Day Weekend Report

Wow bro!  Thank you so much for your generosity!

Unfortunately I may be booked this weekend. I'm headed to Pohick bay on Saturday with a friend to try our hand at (as Capt.  Mike calls them)  Potomac Pike.  Then the following day I'm  probably going to my in laws. Which day were you planning on going? In case my plans change for Sunday.

If not this time, I would totally be up for the next opportunity!!

Thanks again Travis!

I got a three day weekend, so if all three days are looking good I'm heading to OC early Saturday morning and back Monday afternoon.  Staying at 2nd home my dad has out there.  If the weather is not so good Sat/Sun but good on Monday, then I may end up at the racetrack on Monday.

Maybe we can exchange numbers via email so we can keep in touch if things change or for future outings... I'll send you my info

Thanks!
