8/31, Out of Occoquan

My neighbor, Bill O'Connor, and I too off at 0530 and put in at the Occcquan ramp. We motored out of the No Wake Zone and went to our destination.

The weather was great and we did not feel the heat until we took out at 1pm.

By 0700 we were fishing and a few minutes later, Bill declared that the skunk was off the boat.

But that was it for a while. We were at slack high tide and I kept telling Bill that things would be really good once the tide started to move out. Of course, it did and we started catching.

This one was almost 19"!

That's a nice fish...pay attention to its girth.

We kept catching (Bill was up by a couple)....

I caught a few too including this very nice one...

Then, in just a couple feet of water, I got a nudge and slammed the hook. I then declared, "get the net".....

This 19+ incher was fat and healthy!

Look at the girth compared to the other one. Nice fish indeed!

After about a dozen fish (and losing the tide) we were going to leave the area but Bill got one more bite....

We then left and fished some other grass but unfortunately...no more  hook ups (we did get a couple of bites).

As we went back up the Occoquan we fished around and saw this!

Is that the dreaded YP net?

Finally, as I was casting a chatterbait, I heard a loud pop and could not figure out what it was......until I reeled the CB all the way back.

There goes a nice Kistler Magnesium TS!

Bottom line: Great day out, some nice fish and I wish we had an Endless Summer!

Sorry about that rod.  I've got two ($110 each, new,  two - three yrs ago on BBC) and love'em.  I throw the 7'H probably more than any other rod.

Ernie- that is one chunky fish! I love fishing our local ponds, but there is nothing like catching a nice fat largemouth on the river.

I think the bait smacked the rod because it was a clean break. I saw the same thing happen to Luparello.

I will need to replace it because I really liked the rod.

Mike- any idea about warranty with these? I bought it used but was nearly new. I wonder if they have some sort of a "trade in" policy.....I will look online later.

No idea.  But Kistler is not known for its warranty, i.e. you will find they offer nothing close to Shimano/Loomis.

I remember some debate about this on the Kistler boards awhile back: basically, the owner (Trey Kistler?) stated that their policy reflects the belief that if a rod performs longer than say, a year, then any problems after that period are very unlikely attributable to a manufacturing defect.

Personally, I could not tell you the warranty policy on any of the rods I own.  It is not a consideration when purchasing rods. Just MHO.

I've four Kistlers: 1 LTA, two magnesiums and an Argon.  They all see quite a bit of use and no problems yet.  Not to say I don't have a St. Croix fetish in addition, but that is another discussion.......

Last, take a look at the Abu Veritas.  Very similar to the magnesiums IMO, but slightly heavier in the power rating (not heavier in terms of mass).  Dicks used to carry them.
