Upper Potomac River, 6-30-12

Four of us (Curly, Jeff, Andrew and I) met up at POR at 4:30 this morning to get the shuttle started.

We saw lots of tree damage on the way including a tree down on Lander Rd. which held us up while the crew cleaned it up. I actually missed the 1st Lander turn but I'm kind of glad I did as there may have been greater blockage on the 1st road. But without incident we all got on the water before daybreak and started the float. The air was clean and it was not muggy.

Saw some downed trees on the water as well....

I knew all the guys were catching fish so I decided to take pictures since I could not get any of them to stick (4 hookups, no lands)!

Finally, I got slammed and even got an aerial......from a channel cat?

But it was a nice 17 incher and he gave me a good tussle....

About 1/2 way down the float, we all met up and reported out. I think Jeff had 8 or so, Curly about 10 and Andrew at least 1/2 dozen. Me? Only a cat!

So they all took off to catch some more fish....

The sun was now up so it was my turn....I saw a bed of grass that had some fast moving water coming around it so I came in through the back and cast to the fast water.

Instant ht!

This guy was over 16" and a fighter! I was whooping it up because I had been 0-4 on the previous 4 hookups.

A minute later, another.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/011-10.jpg

This one was 12-13".

Then this BG took my 2/0 hook!

I took a break to do some wading....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/014-9.jpg

....and I caught 2 small smallies and a fall fish on the fly rod. Good fun!

At 10 AM, we headed back to reality....

....but not before having some home made (Jeff) venison summer sausage.   cool

Ernie is certianly the "King of Photography" on any trip he is involved in.  I got one pick of an 11" SMB before my camera battery died........and isn't worth posting after his 16+" SMB pic.  I did get a 14" that Jeff got a pic of.

It was a great trip and a big THANK YOU smile to Ernie for being gracious enough to let me borrow on of his yak set up (everything included but rod and lures).

Next time we need to do the float from further up river to POR! big_smile

Brunswick to POR is a nice long float....let's start planning it.

However, I always run out of time on the Lander-POR run. There are so many ledges and riffles....oh well.

I have to tell my sister who is a pro photographer. She would laugh at my point and shoot digital......but it works for me!

Just gotta let the current take you down the riva, without stopping too many times to fish what looks promising...........could be done easily in 3-3.5 hours........... smile

Waaaay too fast for me.....I like at least 4 hours for Lander-POR, 7-8 for Brunswick to POR.

Or, do Brunswick -Lander in 4-5 hours.

Great report and pics!

This recent weather is perfect for hitting the rivers, especially for wading. Nothing beats getting in the water to fish on a blistering hot day.

Re: Upper Potomac River, 6-30-12

Some nice shots of the area & thanx for sharing.

I'm more of a hole-humping type looking for big fish.  Last Friday started fishing at 6:30a and got to the take out at 8:30p.  Trick is use the yak as a taxi & get out allot.
