Roaches Run - Poachers, Massive Herring Schools and Stripers

I went out at lunch today and hit Roaches Run for about 20 minutes. It was the very end of low tide. There were thousands of herring up on the shore. Every once in a while there were stripers blowing through them - I would say 15 to 20 inches. I have never seen stripers in water that shallow.

I ended up catching 5 herring (unintentionally) on a 4 inch rapala jointed minnow. They were all hooked in the mouth.

While i was there I watched a guy and girl (with a little kid) cast net at least 300 herring and put them in laundry bags. He came over and made some small talk - he let me know that there are so many herring this year because last year you weren't allowed to keep them and this year you are. Not sure if he was clueless or just trying to make me think it was okay.

Any of you guys ever report anyone? I sort of wanted to - but this couple sort of looked like they were living out of their car and needed food.

Poaching is poaching......what if they were stripers or bass? I would have simply told them it was illegal and that I would make a call to the authorities. This was really bad in the Chain Bridge area for years until the cops started to come by once in a while.

Go back in to some reports from a few years ago when Jumping Jasper spotted some guys on Goose Creek diving and spearfishing. They were nabbed!

I'd have called the fuzz on that guy in a heartbeat, poachers really get under my skin.

I hope he's not living out of his car, cause if he is then most of those herring are already spoiling. He might be selling them. I'd strongly recommend calling the poaching hotline today and let them know what you saw.

Re: Roaches Run - Poachers, Massive Herring Schools and Stripers

Called this afternoon - the person I spoke with didn't take too many details but said an officer would be calling me for more details. Thanks for the phone number. I was kinda up in the air about it yesterday - basically because of their appearance, but Ernie's comment "......what if they were stripers or bass?" hit home, I definitely would have no problem reporting anyone for poaching stripers or bass.

On a side note, I hit gravelly today and caught 12 white perch on almost the same number of casts with an inline spinner - all caught when i started retreiving through the inside seam of the out going tide. then it stopped completely.

Anyone having any striper luck yet?

Any size to them?

Nope, they were all about 7inches. But I did get this guy at chainbridge about two weeks ago. Biggest for me.

Nice! That's probably as big or bigger than any white perch I've ever caught.

I'll be doing some striper fishing next weekend. I can't wait.

Re: Roaches Run - Poachers, Massive Herring Schools and Stripers

It is hard to tell from that picture but it was probably about 11 or 12 inches. The current is so stroing at chainbridge that when I brought him in i thought I had 3 or 4 lb shad. This is my first year catching white perch. This one was a lot darker than the others i have caught, are the larger ones usually darker?

Good luck striper fishing - the reports are starting to explode.

White perch come in many different hues...from black backs to golden to silver.

They are a great LT/fly fish....tasty too!

If its off the GW Parkway or C&O Canal, call the US Park Police 202-610-7500

They are more likely to show up if its an easy spot to access-Gravelly & Roaches Run vs. Chain Bridge.
