South Holston Fly Fishing

I spent this past weekend in Hickory Tree, TN, fishing the South Holston River outside of Bristol for trout. It was a beautiful weekend weather wise, and with the river filled with 5-6000 trout per mile, the fishing was beautiful too. The only species that is stocked is Rainbow Trout, so hooking into a nice wild Brown was my mission. Between my 2 friends and I, we caught roughly 45 fish in 2.5 days (all day Friday, Saturday and from 7-11 AM Sunday). We caught an equal share of rainbow and brown trout, mainly in the 12-15" range. The largest fish of the weekend was a gorgeous 18" Brown trout- picture to follow once I get home from work. Small (size 20,22) nymphs and midges that imitated mayflies were the ticket. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves to fish. The scenery is great, the people are friendly and the fish are plentiful.
