Potomac River Monitors

I look at the Potomac River monitors on line. They usually show two graphs...gage height and discharge volume. Which of these two is most important when deciding the safety of kayak fishing on the Potomac?

Re: Potomac River Monitors

The river flow has been above nornal for the last 3 months.  See the data below.

As ageneral rule, 10,000 cubic feet per second (CFS) is my limit above National Airport.  Anything under 6,000 CFS is very good.  There is a huge difference between 6,000 and 10,000 CFS when it comes to a drifting speed!  15,000 is quite dangerous........especially in narrow sections.

Although the Specific Conductance graphic is not working right now, I also use that to determine water clarity as the last check to see if the river is fishable.  Values below 250 are muddy, 250-285=stained,  285-350=good visability, 350+=crystal clear.
