11-25-07, Finally...more than 1 fish report (Cedar)

I fished Cedar Lake (what else is new?) today for a solid 2 hours. The target was crappie and the arsenal included a 20 year old mini reel on an equally old 8'6" whippy crappie pole. There is no backbone to this rig and I was using 4 lb line to boot! Needless to say, setting a hook the normal way was not in the cards. On the end of the lie was a 1/8 round jig head with a Gulp! 2" white curly tail.

I started behing my house on the rockpile and didn't even get a nibble so I went behing my neigbor's house and fished over the XMas tree (what might be left of it). I noticed the bobber move ever so sligtly and I raised the pole and started to bring in this guy!

Nice fight....you can't give any slack because this pole is so soft that any release of pressure would set the hook free which is what happened on the next fish (which may have been a nicer one).

I then kept moving west and got a few nibbles which I suspect were blue gill. Then I got a solid bite and a nice crappie was landed. Then I caught another bass so I was getting hopeful that they had schooled up....sure they did. An hour later and I was back behind my house. By this time, I had lost the curly tail and was fishing only with the scented body. I cast just behind the rocks and the bobber went down. A few seconds later, this guy was landed.

I sure wish I could get these guys figured out. If anyone wants to try the Gulp!, come see me and I will give you a piece!!

That was a Gulp! in the crappie's mouth...on a crappie jig (1/8 oz).

That IS an old, old cappie stick! But it does the job since it's very soft so you don't rip the mouth when bringing the papermouths in.
