The forecast called for a windy day....should we go? Heck yes, we should go and we are glad we did.
Originally, Greg and Tyler Folts were going to join me for a day on some salt water but the forecast forced us to fish close to home. Then, Greg called and realized that he had some other duties to take care of so Curly gladly filled his seat.
We got to Gravelly while it was still dark and carefully ran over to the Washington Channel for some top water action. nothing going there.
We then hammered the shoreline and the drop offs with a variety of jigs, swim baits etc but nothing doing there until Tyler declared he had a fish on!
It was a very nice 13.5" crappie and the skunk is off the boat.
We then decided to jig a little deeper and Curly was able to bring in a 17 incher that hit a Silver Buddy.
But that was it, no more hits until....
....Tyler got nailed with a SB! Curly performed some surgery and all was well....
The WC always offers some nice photo ops. Today, we had a couple of low flying helos and then this 100 footer came by....
We were perplexed at the lack of bites in the morning. We had a nice incoming tide with a little wind (it was perfect until mid morning). We decided to go up river and see if anyone was home at the Tidal Basin outflow. They were not.
After a stop at a very important new place we found on the river, we headed back down to see if we could catch a fish. So Curly asked me if I had any rod holders aboard and that is all she wrote. Within minutes, we had 4 lines out, 2 on rod holders and 2 in the hands of Tyler and Curly.
It did not take long...BAM! Curly's rod gets slammed and this 21" beauty comes aboard. That's tonight's dinner at the Casale house!
A few minutes later, we picked up an 18 incher...
It was really slow after that. We were also worried because there was a sailboat out there with 4-5 people that was making a lot of erratic moves. I think the skipper needed some lessons. We managed not to get hit.
Back to the fishing. We were going to make some adjustments when Tyler's rod got hit and he was able to bring in a nice smallie!
He gets hit again....
....but this guy does not quite make the cut. However, all of the stripers caught today were healthy and fat!
Have you noticed that the boat driver has yet to catch a fish? well, the crew felt sorry and handed me a rod.
What was this guy thinking?
Around 12:30, we decided to call it a day and as we were bringing the lines in, we noticed two of the DC Harbor Police boats high tail it out of the Channel. A Fire Boat was right behind them. We turned on the radio and the Coast Guard was reporting a sailboat that was up on the rocks just above the 14th St. Bridge. Tyler noted that this may have been the knucklehead that was in the channel earlier so we decided to take a look.
We got wet on the way there since the confluence of the Anacostia, Washington Channel and Potomac was a 2-3 foot washing machinate. It was rough. It did get windy, just like they said it would.
When we got to the "incident" site, it really was a non issue. Some boat was parked real close to shore so back in we went.
Here is the crew with the their catch!
Great day on the water....I believe that this was the only place to fish (in a 17 footer) unless you were anchored for cat fishing!

Not a bad haul. Looks like it was a pretty slow fishing day everywhere. Not a whole lot of fish caught at Anna today.

That is a nice mixed bag. WTG guys.

Somehow, we scratched out a few but I was disappointed that we didn't catch more of 'em by casting....
