Racetrack Bass

At the track this weekend for my final races of the year.  Had a little bit of time to fish as the sun was setting this evening.  I decided not to bother with the Dan River since it is extremely muddy.  It's always muddy as far as I can tell.  I may try it Saturday evening anyways.  Probably fish Briery Creek some on the way home on Sunday too.

Tonight there was a lot more minnow surface activity than the past few times here.  I started off where I left off my last time here.   It only took a few casts of my jointed minnow to hook up.  At first I thought I had hooked a leaf or something, but as I swept the rod it kept bending so I set it hard.  The bass took it all the way in and hooked deep, but not in throat. It was really easy to get the lure out.

It worked my way around the pond some more with no luck but I was seeing signs of good size fish going after the minnows near the shore.  Eventually I put on a swimbait and it was only a few casts of that before I thought I hooked something other than a fish, especially a decent one.  These bass bite really softly.  This one was even bigger.  The tail of the swimbait was gone too.  That was a good bait for me, it caught my only keeper during the NHBA tournament.  Good thing I have two more left.

I'm really surprised that the bitsy minnow hasn't been catching anything.  I figured I would at least catch a bluegill with it.
