Deale...on a fly, 7-9-11

After having breakfast at the Happy Harbor Restaurant in Deale, David Policansky and I headed out to do a little white perch fishing with our fly rods. The day was beautiful and we had light winds and an incoming tide.

As we motored out, we ran into this fella.....

I don't quite get this!

We got to the rocks and within a few minutes, David was hooked up....

....as he was a few minutes later!

I think he had 3 or 4 in the boat before I finally got mine!

We fished for a bit and then we decided to make a run across the bay but once we got out in the open, the N winds started to kick in and we changed course and tried a few of the creeks north of Deale. they were too shallow and we did not catch any so we came back and started to work the north jetty. We each caught a few fish but the waves form the bay made it difficult to hold position so we went back inside the breakwater.

This is when Davis nailed a 12 incher!

I went to the spinning rod because it was very difficult to fly fish and at the same time hold the position with the trolling motor with the wind kicking up to 15!

We continued to slowly pluck away at the fish but in reality we head a very slow day. I would say that we each caught a dozen or so perch, most were keepers and a few 11 & 12 inch fish in the mix.

As a matter of fact, the last one I caught was close to 12! All fish were released....

I attribute the slow day to the dreaded emerging Red Tide. The water looked awful in many places.

The best spot was the point of the north breakwater because there seemed to be more oxygen there. That's my theory and I am sticking to it.

I hope this Red Tide goes away so we can get back to catching numbers!

Still, a great time with David and a very nice day on the water!

Time to go fishin' again!
