Potomac River report, 6-17-11

Wes Wakefield picked a perfect day to go fishing with me. He had not whet a line for over a year! Yikes!!

We put in at Pohick and headed north....there was a chill in the air and not a ripple on the water plus the moon was full which meant a big flood tide. I have no clue if that is bad, good or indifferent.

I took the skunk off with a legal 13 incher and a few minutes later I was rewarded with this guy!

He was a couple of ounces short of 4 pounds! Not a bad start!

Wes is not used to throwing soft plastics but he caught on quickly and got on the board! I heard this mumbling and when I turned around, Wes was trying to tell me that he had a fish on while he munched on a cheese cracker!

This guy let us get real close.....

We moved from our original position after catching the 3 fish and went to Little Hunting Creek as the tide rolled in. We took a skunk there but were shown some very shallow water thrashing by a large fish (carp or NSH). Very cool!

So we worked the area just south of the creek and scored decent fish!

Things slowed down and we headed to the MD side to see if anything was biting. I managed this guy of a tree limb that was sticking out 30 yards from shore.

The water there was stained and the current was running hard so we decided to go back to where we started where we scored well despite of the building winds and waves.

For the day, I managed 7 bass, none of which were dinks or punks. Wes managed a limit of 5 including the one above which was a shortie (16") but a fattie (2.5 lbs).

We had a great day on the water....

I thought I had seen it all!

Now...time to start chasing some tasty white perch for a while!!

A good year for you Ernie on the Potomac! Keep it up!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

The new rig has opened up some closer in areas and with the help of some friends, we get to catch a few. I do miss the Queen Mary but not that much.....
