11-4-05, Potomac River (Lower) report

Andy Yentzer and I put in at Chaptico this morning and headed out to the Potomac to hone up on the trolling skills (thanks Jeff, Ron, Keech and Petey for all the pre trip advice) in preparation for the tourney. It was a gorgeous morning (Sunny, 74 by 2 PM.) and was breezy early (two footers were crashing over the front) but calm waters later.

Before we got out of the Wicomico we saw some birds and I cannot resist casting to birds so out comes the light tackle and we get 3-4 small stripers in a few minutes. Then the birds took off and the bite stopped. So...we proceed to the middle of the river and started trolling. We pulled everything but the kitchen sink. We saw Bodeen and Big Zip out there and they were catching a few. But not us! We trolled lumps, humps and lots of water. Our only results were a lost Stretch 25 and a lost tandem with a big weight. Damn those crab pots!

So around 1, we headed to Quades so I could get my crab cake fix...maybe that would change our luck. Then the wind laid down and the river got real nice. We continued to troll the rest of the afternoon but still nothing, just a few knockdowns.

So I resorted to what I know best, I headed for Swan Point and we found some birds working the shallows and guess what else? About 25 stripers in an hour! All the 15-17" we caught (many) were fat, fat, fat. Those puppies are eating well!

The 20 incher I got right before we left was very healthy.....and he will be very tasty tomorrow night!

Great ending!
