Re: Cannot win - Mother Nature keeps the Potomac high

I went out today by chain bridge and casted. Caught about 5 Hickories, 4 herring (in the side), and 2 white perch on shad darts. It was tough because I could only find a small eddy because the water is still stained and high. There were tons of shore folk tossing nets and using dip nets. I saw several snakeheads caught in the nets. I also saw one surface in front of me. Hopefully things will settle down and the stripers will stick around.

With all the people using nets down there you'd think the game wardens would go down there more often. Talk about untapped revenue... wink

Redfish, how do you rig the shad darts? What weight darts do you use?

Re: Cannot win - Mother Nature keeps the Potomac high

I finally got a window to get out and was there last night as well. Caught maybe a dozen hickories and herring. Also a small LM bass. No WP for me but saw plenty of them in the creek.

The river is still high and running hard but the creek mouth and various eddies and pools are, or more likely after this latest round of storms, WERE  fishable! Hickories were stacked up and spawning. White perch below them. Looked like they were feeding on the eggs. Cool to watch.

Lots of guys with nets and fish spears looking for snakeheads. I only saw one snakehead and saw one caught in a cast net. Learned something from one of those guys. Several had lights. He said they catch a lot of snakehead at night. Maybe that's the time to try for them at this time of year. They never seem interested in anything I throw at them when I've seen them. Always exceptions but others report the same for the most part.

Well that sucks. Hope it doesn't hurt the bass spawn too much.

Re: Cannot win - Mother Nature keeps the Potomac high

Lots of nets and pitchforks down there. I was thinking about it though, since snakeheads are not protected does that mean that you can catch them however you want? For the most part I saw less guys with trashbags full of shad and white perch, less being the operative word.

I was using a 1/8 dart with a 1/4 dart about 16" above it tied in a double surgeon's loop. I lost a lot of them though, mostly to big hickories that I grabbed the line instead of the fish on. The most successful for catching the hickories in the mouth was a 1/32 white marabou crappie jig with a pink head behind a 1/2 trolling sinker.

Re: Cannot win - Mother Nature keeps the Potomac high

I went tonight, water is still way up. Pimmit is full of herring though. Still caught some hickories, but mostly herring and white perch. I saw a few snakeheads, and a few snakeheads in trashbags. Those guys are getting good at catching them with nets. One of them was massive, girth of my thigh almost.

Yeah I guess I should have said I was on foot... Shad don't really care if it's muddy and they pack what small eddies they can find.

Re: Cannot win - Mother Nature keeps the Potomac high

Glad to see you were on foot and not "on the news" today.  Anyone going out on the Potomac when LF if over 5', deserves the Darwin Award" lol.
