Tautog Fishing at Concrete Ships (Kiptopeke, VA) (Apr 09, 2011)

Redfish12 and I planned a tautog fishing trip since fall last year.  Last Saturday,  we finally made it.  It was my second and redfish’s first tog fishing trip.

Due to the strong wind, we gave up fishing the First Island (CBBT). We went to the Kiptopeke State Park and fished the Concrete Ships

We caught 10 tog.  Three of them were keepers at 14.5”, 15” and 18”.

I am not an expert but I put quite an effort to make this video for future tog fishermen.

Here are fishing log/report/tips

Thanks,
Joe

Great video Joe! I had a blast on this trip and I apologize for not taking more footage! I need to work on a better mount for my camera.

Tog were tough to catch, thanks again for giving me a sharp hook!!!!

Rod is very important (SERIOUSLY).  You can buy the rod at Basspro in Hampton. It's about 40 dollars

I will get the model # later.

Here is the inexpensive but very good Muskie rod:

You need the 7' model.

BTW, I broke Redfish's rod accidently.  Alos the toll and parking fee at Kipto State Park will be $24 or  less.

Good Luck

Yeah I remember the toll killing us when we went striper fishing out at the ships.  What reel did you pear up with it?

Penn 9m is what I had on it... They are very solid reels for the kayak. Ht100 drag and plenty of line capacity. You can get them on eBay for about $15 and then clean and lube yourself. Very easy to work on.

Sharp hooks were the game changer for me, I missed so many bites before that.
