4-9-05, Potomac River (DC) report

Took John (Beerfish) out on the 19' CC to give the Fletcher's portion of the Potomac River a shot. Had heard of lots of shad being caught as well as some stripers. We put in at Gravely Point at 4:30 AM...yes very early!  After a slow, dark ride up the river, we met up at Fletcher's with Mike Bailey (aka Animal or River Rat) and 12 year old Danny.

By 5:45 AM we were fishing.....and holy smokes, were we fishing!

Final tally for the day (ended at noon):

Nine (9)- Blue Cats up to 25 lbs.

Two (2)- Channel Cats up to 6 lbs.

Three (3) stripers; 15, 17 & 25 lbs. (I messed up the pix for the 25 lb striper, sorry John).

What a day! Lots of tired arms as we used fairly light tackle. Best part is that we only saw a total of two other boats and a few canoes.
River is still fast but has settled down considerably. Water quality gets better each day. Water temps were in the mid 50s in the early AM and 57-58 at noon.

We used fresh bait and bounced it off the bottom in 20 ' of moving water.
