Re: It's official- Mike "animal" Bailey will speak at 2/16 NoVA CCA mtg.

Mike will share knowledge he has acquired from fishing the upper tidal Potomac just below the fall line at or around Fletcher’s Cove over the past 34 years.  Join us to become more informed about this wonderful fishing resource in a general discussion based on a calendar timeline to include techniques, river levels, tides, weather conditions and access.  He will attempt to display photographs and links to online resources he utilizes to gauge the river’s pulse.
Species to be discussed include;

Walleye

Hickory Shad

American Shad

Striped Bass

White Perch

Snakeheads

Catfish

Mike is an enthusiastic outdoorsman and accomplished Angler – and we look forward to having him as our first guest speaker of 2011!

Re: It's official- Mike "animal" Bailey will speak at 2/16 NoVA CCA mtg.

I should preface this in saying that I am not a CCA member and it was my first meeting attended........

If you're a NoVA CCA member reading this......this is an outsider's first impression (right or wrong, good and bad) of your meetings.

The meeting was not run well and was not organized.  The "introduction" of Mike as the speaker was not enthusiastic and low-key.  Mike did OK for not really preparing for the talk, and he was not real forthcoming; he did answer questions, but kept to the very basics.  Folks that have never fished that area of the river learned a few pointers.  Didn't help that some know-it-all $#@& kept interjecting his "experiences" and having his cell phone go off at least 2 different times while Mike was talking.  For me, it was a complete bust and disappointing; others that were unfamiliar with Fletcher's may have been tickled to death.  Mike is a great guy, but I don't think he had any previous experience as a public speaker......he was not very comfortable....not his fault.  I've learned more in 30 seconds pulled up to Mike on the river, than the hour that went by last night.

Had several people come up to me before and after the meeting and said, "You're Curly!" or "You must be Curly!".... lol  Quite a few lurkers from NoVA CCA on this forum.

Did talk with George Allen and Bob Forbes before and after the meeting. It was nice to bump into them there.

Thanks for your input......I may have not been as critical the first time out but that's life. The new VP had to run the meeting because Rob, who is the president, had a high school baseball meeting with one of his kids.

I was the one who secured Mike to speak knowing full well that he had not spoken in these type of meetings.  Apparently, based on feedback from other forums, he was well received.

Didn't really mean to come across as "critical"....sorry about that, but it was my honest first impression of CCA.  Maybe my expectations were set too high?  Like I said, Mike did OK under the circumstances.  My comments were intended as constructive........I may go again sometime smile .

I asked who they were on the forum, since they recognized me from pics on Pacemakerfishing, and several said that they did not "post" on this forum.  I think "Aches n Pains" was the only poster I saw there.  I'm pretty sure Bob Forbes (really great guy that I've fished with) told me he does not post here.  In this case, "lurkers" was not meant in a negative context.......Maybe I should just keep my comments to myself, since they appear to be coming across poorly tongue .

Maybe we should come up with a new word....."lurker" seems to always have a negative connotation behind it, at least to me.

"Spectators"

Reading the posts on the web site can be very entertaining (This one for instance) There is not always a need to chime in.

I like spectator, but even a spectator should say something so you know they're not a lurker. Even if someone has nothing to offer, a "nice post" or "thanks for the info" should be sufficient.

Re: It's official- Mike "animal" Bailey will speak at 2/16 NoVA CCA mtg.

I like "spectators" too and I see the point about posting. I know a lot of folks who like to read and not post. Some only go fishing when I take them so I know they are not "taking" info...they are simply being entertained (to Jeff's point).

My only concern is chasing someone away from the Forum, especially the younger crowd.
