10-15-07.....New Big Fish Boat Record....DC Waters Report!

Curly and I were supposed to go fishing last Friday but a front was moving in and the weatherman said high winds so we both went in to work.

This morning, we put in at Gravely Point where it was cool but not windy. Immediately, we headed over to the Washington Channel (takes all of about 4 minutes) and we began looking for fish by trolling 6 rods.

On our 1st and 2nd passes, we got hits but we landed no fish. For the next hour or so, we simply trolled and trolled. We decided to pick up and try the bridges but that was a futile effort also. So back to the WC we go but it's now 10:30 AM and we are working on a skunk. That is.....until Curly lands this under sized trophy!

Hey....SKUNK is off the boat!!

A few minutes later, one of the rods goes down and I start winding in a log....at least that is what.......

...this felt like!! Nice!!

Things got slow so we decided to do some jigging as we were seeing some nice marks in 20 feet of water. I got a hit and brought this guy up...

a very hungry crappie!! But that is all we could muster, so we started trolling again. As soon as Curly says "all six rods are out", we get a bottom snag....no wait, it's moving! A big fight ensues and Curly, using my St. Croix PS 60MHF with 20lb Fireline (8 lb diameter), starts bringing in the monster. It sure looks like something from Mars when it popped out of the water!

But it's a Blue Cat and it tipped in at 35.1 lbs!

That is the biggest fish ever landed in my new boat (so far)!!! By the way, I don't know of anyone else that is catching Blue Cats the way we do (Rebel Brokenback Spoonbills) ....most folks use cut bait (shad).

We didn't get any more but we were satisfied so we headed on out. On the way home, we were treated to the USS Sequoia, which is a 104' Trumpy built in 1925 and was used by many US Presidents.

Another great day on the water!

I almost posted the point you made about catching these big blue cats on light tackle and artificial baits.....ain't notin' like it! It was a great battle and it took a lot of teamwork (and chewed up knuckles) to get that beast on in to the boat!

Trolling for Blue Cat!
You should write an article for Woods and Water.

We have caught quite a few trolling but not in numbers. The live bait guys still catch the most and the bigest (using heavy tackle).

But on light tackle...it's a blast!
