HRBT 10/4....AWESOME!

Me and two of my friends from school went to the HRBT last night for the first day of being able to keep them.  A cop pulled up on us as we were unloading the yaks and we were just thinking through our heads what we could have been doing illegally (couldnt think of what...)  then the cop came out and was like "yall putting in or taking out?"  we told him we were putting in and he was angry becasue he wanted to know what the fishing was like (he was actually really mad because he used a lot of profanity lol).  He then said good luck and left and the fishing began.  We got out there and it was pretty rough.  WE had waves crashing over the kayak and were bobbing up and down.  It was sooooo much fun!  Then we startd fishing!  We would pull into the shadows and cast into the light where you could just see the rockfish lined up.  We threw the swimbaits and ran them 6" from the top of the water and they were slaying them.  OUr other friend from ODU met up with us out there and he was catching them too.  These fish took soooo much drag!  We were all throwing medium rods so the fight would be more fun.  We got off the water at around 12 so we could fillet the fish.  We ended up catching between 60 and 70 fish between the three of us!  Most of the fish were in the 20"-24" range, but we had a few at 28".  Unfortuantly we could only keep 2 a piece.  I cannot wait to cook the fish for dinner tonight!  I also cant wait to get out some more this week!!!!!

I am jealous!!! I've been wanting to get out there at night for some time now and no one wants to make the trip with me! Now that the season is open again I might have to sneak down there. Where do you launch from?

Ok thanks, I'll let you know when I'm heading that way. Does it fish better on an incoming or outgoing? I'm getting excited for kipto and the hot ditch already!

Charlie- I suspect you launced at the Whilloughby Spit ramp which faces the Naval Base on the Norfolk side.

I know one can launch from Hapton but it might be a longer paddle ride.

Yeah I cant wait for the concrete ships!  Last night was an outgoing.  Apparently and ingoing is better, but an outgoing seemed to be fine!

Re: HRBT 10/4....AWESOME!

Kipto and the concrete ships takes a greater effort and has a higher cost as you have to cross the CBBT. As well, I understand the Kipto Inn is no longer in service.

After fishing w/ Capt. Tommy Matioli, I learned a lot more about the HRBT.

1. More places to hide from the wind. You can fish HRBT when CBBT is not fishable.

2. You save at least 30 minutes of driving time.

3. Easy 1 mile paddle to the light line.

4. Easier boat launch from Hampton or Willoughby.

5. Lots of fish (light tackle), just no monsters (eeling).

Whaler,

HRBT is the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel connecting Norfolk and Virginia Beach.  Route 64 runs through/over it.

Re: HRBT 10/4....AWESOME!

Do you anchor in the kayaks or just drift around?  The light line is so well pronounced on that bridge because the bridge is so low.  Makes sight fishing pretty easy and fun.  Good fly rod spot too.  Some shallow areas around the bridge if you are in a boat though.  Mostly closer to the Norfolk side or west side. Never done it in a kayak though.  Might just have to.

Re: HRBT 10/4....AWESOME!

Redfish,
It is a long drive from Arlington to Kipto. Kipto is good place but still it is a hit or miss place as other fishing spot. SInce you will drive a long distance, car-pool with someone who is willing to stay late.  Go that place between mid November and mid-December. Also you need a cart if you bring a kayak.  If I go there I will fish daytime and nighttime. It can be a long day. You need only two eel. If I stay until midnight, I will buy 4 eel.  Make sure you have enough gas  when you buy eel at Ocean East 2 tackle and bait store. There is no gas station from around Ocean East to Kipto state park.
