So i fished Ashburn lake this morning. I caught a 1 pounder. it had the body of a bluegill, but the fins and head of a bass. it wasnt a normal lookin bass. in my mind, bass are more cylindrical, and bluegill are flatter through the body. I will upload pic in a few. its prolly a bass, but looked weird.

Yeah, I know, remember the Burke Lake incident? You didn't believe they were different species when I said they were. That's my one fish nerd triumph, I'm never letting that one go.

Black Crappie... I was too hoping for some sort of fish hybrid.
I'll try to take some pictures of the ones we have at Smith Mountain Lake this weekend. They are bluegills/sunfish/pumkinseeds but sometimes get very large and have mouths you can thumb like bass.

yea red, this guys mouth got real wide like a LMB.

It's actually a white crappie. No black crappie in our lakes here.
Further south, they are called a "callico bass" .

check out the pic with all three

I agree. While you may have only ordered white crappie, its possible they got mixed up at the hatchery. My vote is for black as well but maybes its the camera!
Offline
well well, i guess ill just have to catch him again, and get more detail analysis.....
Offline
Sorry fellas, but it is a white. We went round & round on this 2+ years ago on this forum. And I even posted the different photos as well. I've caught literally hundreds and hundreds of crappie from these lakes..........and every one has been a white.

I'm going to be out that way tmr, I will catch one and count the dorsal spines! Just you wait and see!
Offline
OK Curly may be right, here's his 2lber from earlier this year.. Despite the resemblance to a black crappie..I only count 6 dorsal spines...
