Kayak Installations

Got started on getting my kayak ready for fishing today!

Scotty Rod Holders

Drilled a hole first for the mount then drilled the pilot holes.  Applied silcon glue then put some screws in.

Next I put holders in for my pliers.

Then I started working on my crate.  I am going to boost it up higher than the tankwell with aluminum rods.  I am waiting for attachments in the mail beofre I can fully attach them.  I cut the crate to a different size.  I still need to pickup some zipties to ziptie the three rod holder to the back of the crate.  I am also going to put a paddle holder on each side of the crate so that my spare paddle can be attached in two pieces on each side.  The box in front I picked up because it fits perfectly in the rectangle between my seat and the crate.

The last thing I did for the day was connect 2 pairs of scupper plugs so that they can not be lost and the two different sizes will stick together.

Scuppers in front.

Scuppers behind the seat.

I just ordered dry bags, stuff to finish the crate, paddle leash, and rod leashes.

Tomorrow I am going to install a rod holder in the front and maybe pickup a gps holder for in the front.

Re: Kayak Installations

If you actually need anything done I can do it for you.  I have all the tools at home so I could just pick the yak up and take it here to do stuff.  I would do it for free, I really enjoy working on boats and these yaks are pretty fun to work with.

EMS has everything for 20% off right now btw!  I am goin to get a scotty rod mount for 16.00 tomorrow!

Looking good, Charlie!

A word of advice: BE CAREFUL ON YOUR BACK CASTS!

I learned that one from experience. (A $300 experience  sad)

That sucks!  I read that you should keep the rods mounted so that they do not interfere with overhanging tree's and you cast so I plan on doing that.  I am also trying to prevent any losses by using rod leashes that I ordered this morning.

Re: Kayak Installations

That video that Doug (Aches n Pains) put up (BDR) shows a lanyard system that would keep the rods from taking a swim. I usually take my older, not so good rods when I go out on the yak.

Re: Kayak Installations

Nice work! I have the same boat and put the fishfinder in the sonar shield area. It fits great and is nice to be able to fold down when not in use.

I need to finish rigging my boat- I have a ram tube and a scotty holder that I want to put up front for trolling this fall, I need to finish my anchor trolley, re-do my drybox/battery, and I need to install my scupper transducer... let me know if you guys want to have a rigging party!

I can come.  I do not really have much else to do til I get my two packages and will probably install the stuff the second it gets to the door at home, but I would love to help others out.  If people say what they have to install I can bring all the necessary tools to do so.

Re: Kayak Installations

14th is a Saturday and we are having a big meet and greet at SPSP for the Maryland Kayakers group. Actually, that's how I found this group- through Osprey (Bob) and meet JFFoley (John).

I'll start a new thread here once I get more details about the event. As of now, it will be held at the Sandy Point State Park small craft launch and we will be fishing the morning. There will be either a grab bag of tackle or some other prize available to the person who catches the largest Rockfish.

I am thinking the location may change to Hemmingway's on the other side of the bridge because the park can be pretty crazy on the weekends. If it stays there I think we'll probably do hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill afterwards for anyone who wants to stick around.

Re: Kayak Installations

For the August 14th MD Kayak Fishing group outing; right now, the majority of guys are voting to launch from Hemingway's in Stevensville on the eastern side of the Bay Bridge. There's concern regarding a crowded SPSP, boat traffic, distance between parking and the beach, etc. Also, the consensus is there's better fishing from that side. Oh, the clincher: no beer at the state park! I've never launched from either so am going with the flow. I'll post details on the Want to Go Fishing section once finalized...
